On Why Violence Isn't Fun

ophelia by ophelia · Nov 29, 2003 · 288 views · Journal

So, I'm @ the 311 concert last night....

I thought it was going to suck, I think most of their stuff is corney..But they're actaully really good live, their reggea is awesome, they're rock can be pretty freakin powerful @ times, & they had an AMAZING percussion interlude where they were all playing drums, very tribal, loved it....

So, movin right along, I'm in the crowd, enjoying the music, trying to protect melody from the rowdiness of the wild youths, and BAM, 6 to 8 shirtless hooligans rush right in front of us, & they all start beatin the crap out of this poor unsuspecting dude, he, was also shirtless. So this is all happening literally 6 inches from me, & I, acting on instinct to protect mel & myself, & feeling kinda sorry for the kid getting beat up, grabed one of the guys & shoved'm as hard as I could outa the way & like yelled somthin @ him...But then for like 5 seconds I made eye contact w/the guy I pushed, & during that, I started to think to myself "wait, what if he wants to retaliate?..I DON'T FEEL LIKE GETTING INTO A FIGHT!!"..But then the peacekeeper came & everything was good...WHY CAN'T WE ALL GET ALONG!!..This was seriously the most most obnoxious concert I've ever been to, like 5 fights broke out in our general vacinity...Kids these days, sheesh....

everyone was making fun of me for being the "mom" because (although I was standing in the crowd) I was holding a backpack with everyone's stuff. I almost died laughing when you ran into bunk-o'steel and bounced off of him and fell on your bootay.

yodasucka #1.1 yodasuckaOG 2003

yea i def was laughing SO hard at that...i got pushed so many times in that pit... but i had Bryan to protect me and also sum other random guy who kept standing behind me...
p.s.-i LOVE how u stole my journal title

you would have loved to see the big married guy next to me. he put on a wrist guard and had his wife wear his cap and hold his glasses. he was so intense-glaring at any kid who bumped into him.

thatdarngirl #2 thatdarngirlOG 2002

Ben did this at the last AFI concert! This stupid kid decided to start pummeling this other kid for no apparent reason. Ben grabbed the kid and threw him only to have the kid turn around and prepare to jump him. Just as he was about to leave the ground in a flying leap one of those very scary 'peacekeepers' yanked the kid off the ground..it was very scary.

If people want to mosh that's cool, beating people up is not moshing it's just dumb.

starshiptrooper #3 starshiptrooperOG 2003

why do u people go to these things!?

forrestina #3.1 forrestinaOG 2002

there were plenty of people peacefully watching.

thatdarngirl #3.1.1 thatdarngirlOG 2002

Yeah! I don't think people understand that it's like 1% of the crowd (ok maybe a little more then that) who get out of control while everyone else is just having a good time being peacefull.

magnum #3.1.1.1 magnumOG 2001

more like 10% i think

yodasucka yodasuckaOG 2003

hm... i think i would put it at 9.99%

ophelia #3.1.1.2 opheliaOG 2003

yeah, but, the thing is, at some concerts incidents like this are almost 0%, it depends on who you're going to see....I've never been to a concert w/violence like this before, EVER, & I've been to A LOT of concerts...I think the reason lies in the fact that, 311, although not rap or hip-hop at all, they draw a crowd with a LARGE amount of kids who are quote on quote "gangster" or, actually to be more specific, wannabe thugs....rap concerts are rowdey as heck cause'a of the mass-mentality present, and, this concert kinda leaned towards that..crazy stuff

ophelia opheliaOG 2003

It's also the most amount of weed I've ever seen @ a concert...haha, noticed a lot of bob marley shirts...coincidence??

yodasucka yodasuckaOG 2003

oh down camping when we walked around a night the air had a very poignant smell so that you knew some serious thinking was going down in the circle of like 5 guys.

tinser tinserOG 2002

smells like cotton candy, doesn't it?

starshiptrooper #4 starshiptrooperOG 2003

10 yrs ago almost NO JW kids went to concerts, I'm not kidding. At least in my and other surrounding congregations. I'm not saying don't, just be careful. That was the catalyst for my kid falling away.

I know. I don't know what my dad would've said if I had asked to go to a rock concert when I was younger. (Actually, I think I have a pretty good idea of what he'd say...)

thatdarngirl #4.2 thatdarngirlOG 2002

Well, there's also a difference between a concert and a show. I'd say a show would be a standing room only type of event, while concerts are on a larger scale. And at a show it's not like the amount of people allowed in PNC Arts Center all beating each other up, it's a much smaller crowd for most of these shows.

hunkpapap #4.3 hunkpapapOG 2003

you are very right, when i was a teenager it was seriously taboo to go to any that was not like bon 'homo' jovi or billy 'beached whale' joel. i didn't see one until i was like 20-21 and i love em.

thatdarngirl #4.3.1 thatdarngirlOG 2002

Say whatever you want about Bon Jovi..but Billy is the man.

My mom's been pretty cool about me going to shows as long as I have boys to protect me. I think it may be because I had my older sistet to break the ground for me AND my mom goes to a LOT more concerts then I do..but like Eagles concerts and Simon and Garfunkle.

malibu #4.3.2 malibuOG 2001

yo you are from ny and do not understand the love of bon jovi that this state has. i like him a lot. not hardcore but i a lot. good music.
