Permits to preach -- Big deal?
I usually do not post news stories, just for the fact that 1) I never have anything worth writing about and 2) I was never the best at writing. But I have information that may interest most of you.
Some of you may have heard about our brothers in sisters in a small town of Stratton, Ohio. They are going through legal issues with going door to door. Village officials say you must get a permit before preaching. Ok, so that doesn't seem so bad. So I never put a lot of thought into this until recently. A lot of territories require that you notify village officials before you preach, no big deal. Or is it a big deal? The town of Stratton says, "If you want to solicit door to door, you have to get a permit...Permits are easily obtained from the mayor's office. They cost nothing. No one has ever been turned down." So why is there so much controversy?
If permits are so simple to get, what's involved in getting a permit? I recently was able to talk to my circuit overseer about this. First, every residence in the town of Stratton has to fill out a "No Solicitation Form". The media claims that this form lists several different organizations, and you can simply check yes or no to each organization. The only religious organization on this form is Jehovah's Witnesses. Second, you have to apply for the permit. They require your name, address, social sercuity number, home and work phone, place of employment for the past 5 years and references. So to me it looks like this simple permit is more then just simple. It's very involved. Once you obtain this permit, you have to list every door you will be preaching at, and what you will be saying. Once all this is appoved by the mayor, you can go out in service between 9a.m and 5p.m.
One of the many concerns that the Circuit Overseer is having is, if this town gets this law approved, every town will want to do this, in turn, the state of Ohio will have a list of every publisher, which would be a bad thing when government turns against religion. The mayor said that people move to this town just so Jehovah's Witnesses won't come to their door. But I'm sure everyone in the country will want to move to a small town in Ohio just for that reason. Give me a Break. But what are your thoughts on this? Do you have territory that is similar?

its pretty scary. i wouldn't want to give out all that information
I'm pretty sure this case is over.. and we won..
Actually, this is still going on. There was a case that was very similar to this one. Last fall, (which maybe what your thinking of) there was a case where they set a time frame, where jw's can only preach between 9a and 5p, and they won. This is bigger. They are going to the Supreme Court over this one.
it a ominous prospect, but these are the sort of things we have to expect - out prayers should go out tot he brothers there and we should be thankful we have such freedom to preach and make the most of this gift
actually, since i started pioneering i have gotten a TON of these people telling me to show them id and such. Being that this case is being covered closely by the media, its going to be hard even NOW out in service, although i dont nkow about us WINNING in this case, i do know that the lawyer for JW was rockin in the court a few days ago, i read something on msnbc.com its was AWESOME, let me see if i can find the link...
a little off topic here...but did anyone see that date line story?
i never saw it, or heard anything about it.. i think it fell through???
You know, i understand people being very cautious and scared when people come to their doors...they have no clue who we are. In a few towns in our territory, we just call the police and let them know what streets we are gonna be working and that's all. That doesn't really bother anyone. But when you get into all the information they want and stuff, they are trying to make it impossible to go door to door almost. you know what i mean?
here's a few links to coverage of the story, and i don't think the case is closed yet:
- JW-Media.org's official press release
- Freedom Forum's Case Summary and a timeline
- Law.com
- FindLaw's Legal Commentary *a good one*
- The actual brief about the case... very legal sounding, and i don't understand much of it, except that it's like referring to other court cases and stuff and talking about pamphlets... lawyers will like this one.
- The Christian Science Monitor

According to the bethelites in my cong the case is far from closed...If I hear any updates from them, I'll be sure to post something here....
your right. This one is going to the Supreme Court. I know some brothers and sisters from this congregation and it's still in the process...plus i just talked to the CO and he said the same thing as you...Stratton is about an hour from me, so it's on my local news alot...if i hear anything i will post something as well...

i finally just got a chance to read this. Wow, thats pretty scary...everything down to ss#! thats too much! In our territory, we have to call the police to let them know what area we will be working and from what times, but thats about it. This is scary, but at the same time exciting cuz you know we really are living in the last days.
