The NS-5

omegatweeter by omegatweeter · Mar 6, 2004 · News · 382 views

You might be thinking the picture is a new kind of crash test dummy, but these are actually robots! That's right folks, The NS-5's, the world's first ADA, are on the rise. What is an ADA, you ask? It's an Automated Domestic Assistant. Basically, it's pretty much a robotic maid, humanoids, servants. I couldn't believe it myself, but until I built my own on the website, the idea started to seem more real when I saw the options it could do. I didn't register, but from the drop down menu's, you could see some chores they can do like walk the dog, cook, laundry, and others. It can even lift 800 lbs! They are arriving July 16th, whatever that means. I couldn't find how much these cost, but they say that in 5 years, there will be a human to robot ratio of 5:1. Isn't that crazy?! I'm assuming they're gonna be somewhat affordable and as common as owning a pet. It's even environmental friendly! I don't even know if this is real or not. But would you want one to become a member of your family?

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003

it's a WILL SMITH movie too! Poor Peter. Looks good though. I'll see it.

iwz iwz

there's no trailer out for this yet, right? just that lame teaser with the song?

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003

No trailers yet. Just gag adverts. I think it's stupid, the trailers for that new flick the Stepford Wives has the same exact kinda gag advert thing going on. STILL both have good casts and good directors. So, I'll end up seeing both.

ekulu ekuluOG 2002

theyre making a new stepford wives movie?

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003

Yeah. Nicole Kidman's one. Good cast. Check it out.

so wat's my consolation prize?

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003

no consolation prizes, we just have lovely parting gifts.

omegatweeter omegatweeterOG 2003

oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy!

ophelia opheliaOG 2003

don't they have the technology to make this, or something simular, in real life though?...what's goin on, where are all the androids futurists of the 50's promised us

D
dgiaimoOG 2003

No they don't. They're having difficulty making robots that can even be as intelligent as an insect. They're nowhere near simulating human-level intelligence.

ophelia opheliaOG 2003

hmm..guess i have to brush up on my a.i. development research....i thought by now w/like, nano-circuitry & the increasingly smaller sizes of computer chips & stuff they'd be able to make a "brain" that'd power something at least semi intelligent & automated

D
dgiaimoOG 2003

Did you hear about the DARPA grand challenge? All the entries failed. They can't even get a computer to do a simple thing like drive a car.

malibu malibuOG 2001

well jehovah created something amazing. how could humans who can't even direct their own step equal one of jehovah's creations? just doesn't happen.

ophelia opheliaOG 2003

haha, i never said EQUAL..but.the computer in itself is a modern marvel of technology, think about it, the machine you're sitting in front of right now, 50 years ago, it would take a 20x20 room to conatain it..& now, they have computers that can fit in your pocket...i know they'll never be able to make an artificial equal to humans - that's imposible..even if they could make a machine that could accomplish half the tasks a human could(they'd never be able to do that), how could one impart consciousnes to it?..it'd still be nothing more than inanimate objects interacting w/eachother to form computations...so...long story short, i agree w/you, lol

D
dgiaimoOG 2003

Interesting question, but then again how do we have consciousness? After all, we are nothing more than extremely sophisticated computers. There is no separate "soul" that makes us conscious.

ophelia opheliaOG 2003

yeah, biological computers...if likened to a robot, i guess we're an extremely complex combination of inanimate objects(minerals, nutrients, etc.) making chemical reactions to form life..and if it were to stop there, we'd be nothing more than animals - but our consciousness is modled after god's - him making us in his image & all....so..voila...there's your difference

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 ophelia

But our consciousness must be purely a consequence of our physical makeup, since there is nowhere else it could come from. That's actually one of the things I find so amazing. Somehow God invented a way of modelling a consciousness similar to his own using only materials from the physical universe.

ophelia opheliaOG 2003 dgiaimo

yeah..that is an amazing thought..but..he made all the laws that govern our physical universe, so, bending it to meet his wants is really nothing to him...like...he invented time-space, and the matter that courses through it...things are only the way they are cause me made them that way...so, any enigma, or seemingly impossible notion(such as him being able to synthesize a higher consciousness, through phyiscal matter)is nothing more than childs play to him

iwz iwz dgiaimo

or, conversely, he designed the universe and physical materials in a way to perfectly befit beings made in his image.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003 iwz

a couple of awesome thoughts. never thought of it that way.

Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto,

You're wondering who I am-machine or mannequin
With parts made in Japan, I am the modren man

I've got a secret I've been hiding under my skin
My heart is human, my blood is boiling, my brain I.B.M.
So if you see me acting strangely, don't be surprised
I'm just a man who needed someone, and somewhere to hide
To keep me alive-just keep me alive
Somewhere to hide to keep me alive

I'm not a robot without emotions-I'm not what you see
I've come to help you with your problems, so we can be free
I'm not a hero, I'm not a saviour, forget what you know
I'm just a man whose circumstances went beyond his control
Beyond my control-we all need control
I need control-we all need control

the closest thing they have are those little mini vacuums that bounce off the walls that I bet do nothing. and i bet people trip over them and die

Pete, I've been doing beta-testing for them, and other than the large purple bruises I recieve after a sponge-bath, they're pretty useful.
