eZabel Legacy

From across the Atlantic, Laura brought a distinctly English warmth to a site dominated by New Jersey congregations. She arrived in May 2002 and immediately made herself at home, hopping around her room to Weezer, defending Attack of the Clones against its critics with a passionate essay that won over even the skeptics, and casually dropping Bible wisdom into movie debates like it was the most natural thing in the world. A Liverpool FC devotee with the AIM handle "oobiecat," she had the kind of cheerful, opinionated energy that made people forget she was thousands of miles away. Her closest bond on the site was with forrestina, and together with skaorsk8 and other UK-adjacent friends, she planned the kind of sprawling summer adventures that defined eZabel's golden era: quitting her job, flying to Tenerife, hosting American friends in her parents' teeny tiny English house, and organizing a road trip to Pemberley from Pride and Prejudice so someone could re-enact the Darcy lake scene. A willing Darcy was never found, but the enthusiasm was never in short supply.

Laura's faith wasn't something she wore as a badge; it was woven into everything she said with disarming honesty. She shared the story of losing her grandmother and how the hope of the resurrection pulled a reluctant twelve-year-old back to meetings, eventually giving her the best friends she'd ever had. But she was just as likely to write a thoughtful journal entry questioning why one movie got a pass while another got dogpiled, landing on the conclusion that everyone should mind their own conscience before policing someone else's. She was a lurker at heart, reading 252 photos and dozens of journals while only posting 38 comments, but when she did speak up, she made it count. Her banter with ilikebirds was relentless and flirtatious, promising "oobster specials" and massages while debating motorcycles. She sent care packages of Cadbury chocolate to beachbum and englandkid, bonded with punkprincess over Nelly, and teased superhero about the time she caught him reading J17 magazine at a party. By 2004, she was a secretary for an architect, funding a new gaming PC and perfecting her Rainbow Six technique every night, lamenting that all her friends were pairing off and buying houses and cats while she wasn't even allowed a pet at home.

eZabel Personality Type: ENFP — "The Transatlantic Spark." Laura proved that geography was no barrier to being at the center of things. She was the English girl who showed up to every virtual gathering with an opinion, a joke, and a packet of chocolate in the post. Warm, candid, and just self-aware enough to know she was rambling, she made a site full of Americans feel like the world was a little smaller and a lot more fun.
