eZabel Legacy

Somewhere across the Atlantic, in the spring of 2003, a girl from Chester, England discovered a website full of New Jersey teenagers arguing about ice cream and video games — and immediately felt right at home. Laura joined eZabel in March and dove straight into conversation with the confidence of someone who had been lurking long enough to know exactly where the fun was. Her very first comment was a love letter to British ice cream vans — "jingly music, 99's and cup final weekends" — and when the Americans had no idea what she was talking about, she doubled down with a story about an ice cream man named Mario who "looked exactly like Super Mario.. all he was missing were the Red pants!" and gave out free cones in the summer. She wrote with a natural warmth and comic timing that made her stand out instantly, describing her parents' reaction to the idea of her flying anywhere as requiring "twelve months of planning, booking, arranging, packing and assuring your mother and father that flying, in the main, is a safe form of travel, even if it does mean being suspended in the sky for 12 hours, without them there to hold my hand, order me a drink and decide what meal I want."

Laura's closest connection on the site was skaorsk8, whose interaction score towered above everyone else's, followed by forrestina and ok4now. She bonded with the community over 90s nostalgia — rattling off a gaming autobiography that started with a ZX Spectrum with rubber keys and a tape player, wound through the Sega Master System and Mega Drive, and landed on a brand-new PS2, though she confessed she "still love the SNES though, Vintage Mario is unbeatable." She created the poll "Best Games Console Ever" and championed the PS2 with the air of someone who had done the research. Her taste in music ran toward Eurodance — Sash, Fatboy Slim, Whigfield's "Saturday Night," 2 Unlimited — and she listed them with the unapologetic enthusiasm of someone who knew these were bangers and did not care if anyone disagreed. When her job made her redundant after just seven weeks, she wrote a journal about it that was funny and genuinely moving, musing on how "a job is no longer for life, but just for a week, or a month or one year" while trying to figure out whether to stick with a replacement position she hated or quit and be broke right before friends were coming to visit. Even when life handed her something rotten, she turned it into good reading.

eZabel Personality Type: ENFP — "The Transatlantic Guest." Laura was eZabel's resident Brit — the one who made the five-hour time difference feel like nothing, posting before 9am so often she earned an Early Bird badge for it, attending both the Summer '03 eZabel Party and the Beach Party Bonfire in person. She packed a full eZabel life into a single spring and summer, leaving 34 comments that were longer, funnier, and more vivid than most people managed in years. She dreamed of getting to America permanently — even half-jokingly entertaining ilikebirds' offer to marry her into the country in exchange for cooking and cleaning — and her brief, bright presence on the site was a reminder that the best communities attract people who recognize them from across an ocean.
