There is a major undercurrent in the books that is essentially Tolkein's lament over what happened to Europe, and the English countryside in particular during the two world wars of the last century...

Actually, if you read the intro that I have in my books (they're really old, I'm not sure if it's in all additions) he says he wasn't talking about Europe and England at all and it was not his comment on how he felt about things going on around him.
