it's interesting how the question box or other reference material mentioned how being behind a computer emboldens people to say things they wouldn't say in person. That doesn't mean they don't think it in person, the just wouldn't normally say it. Maybe we can all keep this in mind when we write on here (if ezabel continues to exist).

1) Don't write stuff you wouldn't say in person.
2) Even if you would say it in person, maybe go by the old adage: if it's not nice, don't say it.

We are free to express our opinion, but we should try not to attack others opinions. (We've all been guilty of that, I'm sure).

This is a forum. None of us should look at it as REAL socializing anyway. Watch Ezabel end up in an article about websites to avoid. Haha...

punkprincess punkprincessOG 2001 ·

are you serious? im sorry but it IS real socializing. what todd said was exactly right. why would it be bad associations for our kids to talk to worldly people but when we talk to people on any form of forum it doesnt apply to us? anytime we do anything we should think about how it reflects our personality.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

So I guess no more talk of poop dangling between cheeks. Haha... Real socializing is getting together with people, not typing on a keyboard.

R
rocksupastarFounder · web-toedchloe

are you looking on eZabel for dating purposes?

B
brothermanOG 2004 · rocksupastar

No, but I think it was a little broader than just dating. Making friends on the internet is no different than looking for a date.

web-toedchloe web-toedchloeOG 2001 · brotherman

read it again, buddy. you obviously didn't get the point.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 · web-toedchloe

actually the main points were that parents need to keep their kids in check, even ourselves, into not getting into unfamiliar sites such as porn and chat rooms and chat websites as we dont know who can be on the other side of those chats etc.

so altho the internet IS beneficial it can also be dangerous. as with anything in this world we need to proceed w/the necessary cautions.

iwz iwz · socalgal

This site is not a social network, it's not myspace/facebook/friendster/etc, it's not for finding new friends, it's not a dating site, etc. It's for a small group of friends to communicate and discuss things. I know pretty much everyone here in real life, except for Gina, but I know that a lot of you guys know her personally anyway.

I think the point that really touches on eZabel pretty directly was the one that Todd mentioned yesterday: about people being emboldened to say things they normally wouldn't because of the "virtual" nature of the medium. This has become more and more of a problem over the past six months, and it has bothered me for some time.

I don't know how to solve that problem, and still keep the site alive.

Because, really, I LOVE this website. I've had it going for how long now? Almost 7 years? That's a long time. And, you know, I have made friends from this site. And I've met them in person, and they're cool, and good association. This is most likely due to the fact that eZabel grew organically, from my friends to their friends. We've had our share of unwelcome visitors, of course, but they're easy enough to avoid.

I could do different things. I could make the site private. Make it so you have to be logged in to see things. But, would that really be the right choice? How would that address the "emboldening" aspect of the medium?

I could move this site to a different location, call it something new, open it up to the public completely, and just let it grow on its own. That's no fun though.

I could leave it as is. But I wouldn't want to bother anyone's conscience.

I could just kill it completely. Gone. But, that's a tough decision for me. And I need to think about it, seriously.

I'm going away for a week tomorrow, so I'll have some time to think. The site will remain as is during that time.

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder · punkprincess

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 · iwz

are some complaining and conscience bothering them? or are you being pressured?

iwz iwz · socalgal

Oh, there's been pressure for some time. But, any decision I make will really be based on my own conscience, and attempting to avoid stumbling others.

B
brothermanOG 2004 · iwz

I'll be the martyr... Ban me. :o(

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 · iwz

oh ok. im sorry if i seem ignorant to some things on here....we dont get counseled for everything we do in my area. you know what i mean? thats why i questioned. so something that might be looked down upon there are ok here.

like you wanting to shut down this site because of pressure is WEIRD to me (and i know ultimately its your conscience that makes you do as you see fit) but the brother in his talk mentioned that there are some friends who see ea others blogs, have their own sites etc and can be fun.

iwz iwz · socalgal

I'm not quite sure where eZabel fits in, yet.

Regardless of pressure or locale, the direction is the same.

superhero superheroOG 2004 · iwz

my vote (if you're taking anyone else's opinion on board, which, if you're not, is ok - b/c my name is not on this site, yours is) would be to block it so only people who are logged in can see any comments. At that point, it would be more like an intranet site than an internet site, you know?

One of the things mentioned in the question box is that so many things posted on the internet become public. My suggestion avoids that.

FYI - if there's any way I can help for any of this project, let me know.

coreyfeldman coreyfeldmanOG 2003 · superhero

the two main points I got out of the box, were, 1)people can conceal themselves online and 2)people's conduct can slide online. Making the site private addresses neither of these. imho making the site private could promote these two problems, not fix them.

iwz iwz · coreyfeldman

I agree.

i know a couple people are going to be reeeeeeeeeeeeally annoyed. but brotherman is right i just heard a talk from our CO not too long ago. Again, there isnt a set scrip reference....but he pointed out that the 1st builder of a city was Cain, the second was Nimrod. The CO said these men are known as "Two spiritual losers. With his purpose of populating the Earth, the logistics are such that we can assume large cities were never Gods intent for the Planet." He said it fosters the haves and have nots. Used the insight volume as a refernce.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

Yeah, since our little discussion a couple weeks back I've discussed this with a number of people in my congregation. None of them thought cities would survive. Also consider what Jehovah did to Sodom and Gomorrah. They were thriving cities of that time. Jehovah destroyed them along with the wicked people. So it would only seem logical that he'd pound NYC, LA, London, Rome, etc. to the ground as he did those cities. Can we honestly say those cities are any more moral than their predecessors? I think not. They are probably worse. And again, what good are cities without businesses? Not much. I think it's safe to say money won't be used in the new system. I think gatherings and recreation we enjoy in congregations today is what we'll continue in the future, not broadway shows or major league baseball games and other entertainment.

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003 ·

i like this because you used things like "i think" and "safe to say" and "would only seem" instead of things like "this is fact"

yay!

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

I guess a little more tact works well, but in my mind I think it's fact. And it seems most others think the same. We have to remember Lot's wife. She merely looked back on the splendor of a city and died. It's a good lesson for each of us. Would looking back on NYC at Armageddon, be a life and death situation for any of us? Personally, I'd rather see NYC become a tropical island than have mile high buildings. LOL!

in NJ the limit for drinking and driving is .08. Did you ever wonder how you could get to that limit? Is it 1 drink per hour? Is it 2 drinks per hour?

Do it by your weight and gender.

http://www.vaduilawyer.org/virginiabloodalcoholcontent.html

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

I could have 5 beers in one hour and still be legal.

iwz iwz ·

5 beers in an hour puts me right at 0.080.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

.075 for me.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003 ·

I could throw down a 6 pack in 2 hours and be below the limit. Huh. I never understood how this works til now.

This makes me feel like a lightweight! If I had 6 beers in 2 hours I KNOW I'd feel it and I wouldn't attempt driving.

iwz iwz ·

Oh yeah, seriously. If I've had 2 beers, I usually just make Mikayla drive. Better safe than sorry. 6 beers? forget it!

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder ·

yeah, i normally don't drink much anyway, but if i'm driving i never have more than 2 beers, i drink water, and i wait a few hours to drive just in case. no sense pushing it.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003 ·

exactly. the repercussions are huge... for what? a couple beers? not worth it. not for one second.

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder ·

yeah i've known a few guys who have gotten DUIs, and it is one of the worst things ever. Tons and tons of fines, lose your license for 7 months, mandatory classes. not to mention the fact you could kill or injure someone.

punkprincess punkprincessOG 2001 ·

i lost my licence once. but not for dui. remember your dad yelled at me? lol *punk princess at 18->stupid*

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder ·

wait... i think i do! wasn't it for speeding or something? going 100 or something like that?

punkprincess punkprincessOG 2001 ·

yea, and you dad was like, you dont drive like that when MY kids are with you do you?

it's weird, after 6 beers my BAC seems to increase at a much faster rate

jamiephaser jamiephaserOG 2003 ·

dude i have seen you get tipsy on two longneck coors lights all saucy lol.

theremin thereminOG 2002 ·

Light beer isn't light because it's low in alcohol. Many of the light beers have just as much alcohol as regular beers. Light beers are called light because they're low in calories. You have potential of getting drunk just as fast on light beer as you do on regular beer.

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder ·

according to this, i could drink 10 beers in 25 minutes and be totally wasted.

tesoro tesoroOG 2001 ·

woah! this is eye opening. i could have 3 drinks in an hour and still be at .079

I am so nervous about this, i don't drive after one drink. I'm going to start boozing it up....and then driving. hahah

web-toedchloe web-toedchloeOG 2001 ·

I'm not sure about this. Alcohol stays in your bloodstream for a while, and it doesn't matter what size a person is, the breathalizers are skewed to get around that.

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder ·

yeah but after a certain amount of time it does wear off. and you can see that according to this thing, it does show that it stays in your system for a while, because if i had 10 beers over 6 hours, i would still be well over the legal limit

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

I could have two in one hour and be at .064 um...I so know that I could never even drive after one.

For some reason the third one in an hour bumps me up to .102

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002 ·

Three drinks per hour for me-I would never drive after 3 drinks in one hour.

coreyfeldman coreyfeldmanOG 2003 ·

These are 12 oz beers. a normal can/bottle/draft is 16 oz.

theremin thereminOG 2002 ·

Yeh, definately don't look at this as British pints which is like 19.5 - 20 ounces. That'd be severe.

theremin thereminOG 2002 ·

I hafta find out what I weigh. Haven't been on a scale in ages. But after a tiny bit of drink you gotta do the safe thing - hand over keys to a trusted friend who didn't have anything at all, wait awhile before leaving and eat food, anything that eliminates risk entirely for your situation, even if under the legal limit.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

My rule is, if I have more than 2, I don't drive. I think it's silly to not drive just because you had one beer. I mean if you came with someone who didn't drink, then it doesn't hurt to let them drive, but 1 or 2 is not going to affect me. I mean the calculator said I could drink 5 and still be under the limit after an hour! LOL!

flomojopoanode flomojopoanodeFounder ·

I'm a lightweight, I can only drink 3 in an hour, 4 puts me over. I never drink that much anyway... I rarely drink.

theremin thereminOG 2002 ·

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

theremin thereminOG 2002 ·

Uhm, it'd still be deathly dangerous to drive, no matter what the setting.

A

wow. ok this test is really dumb. according to the test i would have negative blood alcohol levels if i consumed one beer or two beers in a six hour period. that is the dumbest thing i have ever heard. yeah, this makes a lot of sense. right now my bac is a 0.00. but if i drink this beer, then wait two hours, my bac will be even lower than 0.00. i think a cop would still take you in for negative bas levels.

SisterWe're from over there (points in general direction from which they came), we're speaking with our neighbors about Him (points to picture on magazine cover)

HouseholderCool. (accepts literature)

So FUNNY! Everyone listening was taken aback... anyhow because the people are a lot more receptive on the initial call the friends out there adjust their approach accordingly, they're not at all lax in cultivating genuine interest though =D

What stood out to me was how one of the sisters explained that many times the relaxed attitude makes it difficult for students to progress past a certain stage because they just don't see the urgency or a reason to rush, that's just their way of life.

At the meeting yesterday, an older brother did the WT, then made the announcements. He said, 'Sister Jane Doe's grandmother passed away yesterday in... Hades. So Sister Doe will be going to Hades tomorrow to visit family.

flomojopoanode flomojopoanodeFounder ·

?

iwz iwz ·

haha, what?? is Hades a town in CT or something?

web-toedchloe web-toedchloeOG 2001 ·

Hahaha - no, he meant Haiti.

I wish I had something funny to say

flomojopoanode flomojopoanodeFounder ·

I turn 28 tonight, which isn't funny. The funny part is I still joke and feel like I'm 19. I don't think I've matured too much in that respect.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 ·

and you dont have to....always be yourself. just always remember theres a time to be silly and a time to be serious. thats all.

flomojopoanode flomojopoanodeFounder ·

I think that's how I've matured.

I'm able to do just that.

Well, look at it this way. We are the same age and I have 2 kids. I don't feel like 19. I feel like I'm 40. Haha...

yay yayOG 2004 ·

im 26 and have no kids because im still waiting for them to visit me from the future

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

Haha... This reminded me of that weird guy in "The Pursuit of Happiness" who thought the bone scanner Will Smith's character was selling was a time machine.

yay yayOG 2004 ·

28 or 4000000000 years old. you think at 40000000 years old we won't joke around and be idiots? :\

flomojopoanode flomojopoanodeFounder ·

I don't think you or I will have this problem. I do, however, notice some people who are getting "old" in how they act, even though their body is young. What gives?!

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 ·

maybe their mind is to far advanced and think they cant have fun at any age.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

Depends on your situation in life. Todd has a trampoline in his yard. I mean, that is the key to eternal youth! LOL!

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 ·

nah, there's just some people who think that you reach a certain age you have to be nothing but serious. like i said, seriousness has its time and place...other than that, have fun...be silly...do cartwheels.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

I like to shoot paperclips at people near my cubicle sometimes. Haha...

B

Speaking of young bodies, this one is shot...

How do you block your IP address so people can't find out who you are?

I'm thinking of buying a TomTom GPS - any thoughts?

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003 ·

okay this is pretty weird to say but.. my dog and cat are teaming up to wake me up in the morning! Like at 5:30 a.m. for the past few days I have been woken up by my cat's tail whipping me in the face! And then my dog is right next to the cat like he puts his face on the edge of the bed and waits for me to wake up. This morning i opened my eyes and my dog was actually pushing the cat closer to my face so his tail would reach me. This is SOOOO funny a little cat and a huge 60 pound dog teaming up so that they can both get snacks and so the dog can go out to the bathroom. Seriously.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003 ·

if i make the mistake of leaving my door open a crack my cat wakes me up at six. an hour and a half earlier than i normally get up. critical sleep time. she pokes my elbows and hands with a lone claw. if i'm all covered up to the neck she bats my nose. i get sooo mad.

malibu malibuOG 2001 ·

cats are stupid.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

I did a bike ride today from my apartment in Hackettstown to Rt 57 to Washington up Rt 31 to Rt 46 and back home again. 30 miles of torture. I almost died. LOL!

malibu malibuOG 2001 ·

i have a friend that rides bikes proffessionally and his conversations usually begin something like this, "yeah lets meet up. i just got back from a 80mile bike ride so lemme shower and then we'll go eat." i like bike riding and all but you guys are such troopers to be on them for any more than like an hour.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

It took me over 3 hours. I was running on adrenaline the last 1/3 of the trip. But 80 miles is insane around here with all the hilly terrain.
