AIM Conversations

magnum by magnum · Feb 14, 2002 · Ask eZabel · 277 views

Ok I know basically everyone here has and uses AIM or some sort of messenger service. Now what I was wondering how many of you log conversations you have, be it with a aquaintance, someone you just met, or a deep conversation between friends? Personnaly i have never logged a conversation because i felt no need to replay events that have happened. If there is somethin important like a phone number in it i will just copy and paste to a file on my desktop. Supposedly though alot of people do actually log any and all conversations. I have been on the internet for many years and in all my travels logging is very bad idea, and can bite you in the butt one day. Thus i don't like the idea or practice of it. I just dont understand what is the point of doing it in personal conversations either (you don't see people walking around with tape recorders whenever talking to people), besides maybe using it against the person at a later date? So what about everyone else, do you log conversations? Do you think its like a invasion of privacy logging? Shall we burn loggers of conversation at the stake?

I admit I log conversations sometimes...but only if it is necessary to log them, I do know of some that do log EVERY conversation, which can consisit of a quick hello goodbye to a detailed conversation in personal matters, thats just a scary situation though. There are some good and justifiable reasons to log conversations, yet there are times when people do you use it for blackmail sometime later in their future...

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder

something i have always advised against is having a serious conversation in an online chat. you say things more freely because you're looking at a computer and not at a human being, it's just not a smart thing to do. you should always think that what you say is more likely to be passed on and not less likely than in everyday conversation because its as easy as 1-2-ctrl-v. if you get yourself in trouble for saying something stupid, or for saying something that you want to be kept a secret on IM, that's your own fault and nobody else's.

magnum magnumOG 2001

so the only place you should have a serious conversation is like the phone?

g.f.s.rocks g.f.s.rocksOG 2001

No, in person, they can tap the phone lines too, you should make sure they dont have anything on them when your talking to them in person though, so pat them down then start talking, you dont want any thing said to be held against you later...just a warning to all

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder

the phone isnt bad, but you still can feel safe saying things you may not mean. it's always better to have a serious conversation face to face

magnum magnumOG 2001

if i say it i most likely mean it, i dont ever go back on my word. I just dont see why someone would log stuff. Oh well people are messed up.

g.f.s.rocks g.f.s.rocksOG 2001

Yeah, you get to see the expression on their face when your talking about serious stuff...unless you have video confrencing that could work too, but still its better to see them person to person...

magnum magnumOG 2001

yeah in person usually works better but you cant always see someone in person so i prefer the phone if anything. Online is just dumb for real serious stuff...

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder

exactly. if you dont want what you say to be repeated, don't say it. and especially dont say it online. because if you do, yer a numb nutted moron with the sense of a labotomized mexican jumping bean

g.f.s.rocks g.f.s.rocksOG 2001

Yeah, your right there, it is just dumb to have real serious conversations on-line, but yet some people do it without thinking and then that convo gets logged and stashed away till a blackmail is needed...which really stinks...

punkprincess punkprincessOG 2001

ive saved conversations before & printed them out... like say its a REALLY good convo...i also used to save conversations and send them to a seprate folder those having to do with the guy i like... whether i had a convo ABOUT him, or WITH him... so yea... im known to save convos... i also save really funny emails.

magnum magnumOG 2001

umm would you like to come over to this stake over here? we are testing out this new dura strength cord. Dont worry about us tieing you up to this aluminum stake. :throws a match: RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!! BURN!!!!!

g.f.s.rocks g.f.s.rocksOG 2001

I remeber haveing a conversation with you Tina on-line and we were talking and your like, if I answer any of your questions, you have to call me...I didnt understand then, but I understand now, because there are some weird people out there that would keep this stuff and use it against them...

legs legsFounder

ok...so you save them and theyre in the folder...now what do you do with them? Theyre just sitting there, why save them? I don't get it?

magnum magnumOG 2001

so she can open up tina's house o black mail ;) She thumbs through and finds dirt on anyone she needs too!

g.f.s.rocks g.f.s.rocksOG 2001

HAHAHA...so true!! Beware the works of Tina!!

punkprincess punkprincessOG 2001

ummm no. I dont save conversations to hold against people. I save conversations for myself. GOOD conversations. That way, i can re-read them later cuz theyre special... and you can re-live the jubilation. lol anyway i know a lot of people who do that. I used to have a specific email address just for conversations i had with one specific guy. I know lots of people who do that... i actually thought that everyone does. ITs like special memories, and you can look back and see how relationships developed... or flopped lol.

g.f.s.rocks g.f.s.rocksOG 2001

Like me and you Tina (relationship based on just friends and nothing else)....but that was more than a FLOP then a DEVELOPMENT!

magnum magnumOG 2001

err ok weirdo :P

tesoro tesoroOG 2001

emails, i usually always save, like everyones haha i dont know why, i just can, so i do. i have saved some convos, like really funny ones or really upsetting ones! why? no clue. cause im a sick person? haha

punkprincess punkprincessOG 2001

THANK you for writting something like this jahanna, cuz i know you do... so that proves im not the only one! hehehe

g.f.s.rocks g.f.s.rocksOG 2001

That doesnt say much, YOU TWO ARE PRACTICALLY THE SAME!!

tesoro tesoroOG 2001

haha aw thanks.

punkprincess punkprincessOG 2001

THANK you for writting something like this jahanna, cuz i know you do... so that proves im not the only one! hehehe

flomojopoanode flomojopoanodeFounder

That doesnt say much, YOU TWO ARE PRACTICALLY THE SAME!!

(I felt the need to repeat gfs, because you said this same thing twice, most likely by accident. Nonetheless, everything anyone responds to tina's first comment, or gfs' comment, must also respond to mine. we could cause a very dangerous chain effect resulting in the obliteration of ezabel...but I doubt it)

g.f.s.rocks g.f.s.rocksOG 2001

I didnt say it twice....

flomojopoanode flomojopoanodeFounder

I know you didn't, so I had to repeat you. TINA said it twice

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder

i delete almost everything, i have a few things saved, but really when am i gonna go back and read stuff? who has time for that? i mean some people like tina do... (jk jk) but ever since my CO said from the platform that "sentimentality is digusting" i've had the view that if its just taking up space... throw it out

flomojopoanode flomojopoanodeFounder

I've got a big problem with "sentimental saving", but it doesn't have to do with the "aim" conversation thing. I save stuff from trips...like plane tickets, ski passes, trail maps, and such. I also save the pictures I take, but everyone does.

magnum magnumOG 2001

i wish i saved a trail map from whistler :/ basically we packed everything into our suitcases and ran from the room on the last day. That thing was lookin scary! I only have like a total of maybe 15 pictures and they have like 2 year gaps in between each other. Guess im not a picture takin kinda of person, i wouldnt mind being in them or havin them just not taking them.

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder

me too, i save totally unnecesary things like movie ticket stubs, old baseball cards, class notes, current homework assignments, the lunch i just packed for the day, my clothes, my bed, my computer, my snowboard, my car, my basketball... ugh, the list goes on. i've got to learn to let go....

punkprincess punkprincessOG 2001

i HIGHLY doubt he meant THAT type of sentimentality. I mean, i cant understand it being disgusting if youre being all sentimental about when you were in the world... cuz i sort of remember a talk like that. THe brother said are you looking back to youre old personality and being sentimental? b/c if youre thinking "oh it was so nice when i used to smoke" or something like that... it IS disgusting. But not if you save things that are dear to your heart. I have LOADS of things that i save... memory boxes scrap books journals pictures etc!!!! so basically what i just said to you "click click DELETE!"

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder

no, he was talking about stuff that doesn't actually get used for anything, but just takes up space. i think he meant it cuz some people just hold on to too much junk, it clutters up their lives. its true, i have such a hard time keeping organized, the reason is because i have too much crap

punkprincess punkprincessOG 2001

thats true... some things i have a hard time throwing up... and it ends up just making clutter.

g.f.s.rocks g.f.s.rocksOG 2001

Well dont swallow them if you have a hard time throwing them up!!

punkprincess punkprincessOG 2001

HAHAHA! that actually made me laugh out loud... i meant throw them OUT hahahahahhaha

magnum magnumOG 2001

well emails i save just cause usually they so unimportant id read spam before them, j/k. I guess i think emails differently. I mean to save a conversation you physically gotta do file save where a email you get it and it just sits their on your pc. I guess i can sorta see saving some conversations, thanks tina for putting a little different spin on it. Looking back on things is always cool, like i have a webpage i did in like 97, its fun to see what things were about back then. However some people just cant keep things between themselves and need to share things to other people they have no bussiness doin sometimes.

punkprincess punkprincessOG 2001

ohhhhhh see thats not ness. i never save conversations to hold against people. thats just stupid... if i DO save a conversations its purely for my own purposes.. and not to bite the person in the back later...

magnum magnumOG 2001

ok how bout this if u did save it and showed other people would you own up to it?

rocksupastar rocksupastarFounder

hmmm.. i only have 3 convos saved on my computer.. all of them were very serious... but, i really dont like to look at one of them, someday i think ill delete it... i just havent gotten around to it yet...

g.f.s.rocks g.f.s.rocksOG 2001

Yeah, I got some convo's that are my, "Dont look to serious" convos, I dont knwo why I have them on there, maybe because they are a memory of something that was...but I dont know....

iwz iwz

i'm a big sentimental packrat. i have every single note written to me by girls in high-school, and some even from middle school. i have all my yearbooks from middle school with all the little signatures and stupid things people wrote.

i have every email sent to me since like 1996. i also have some saved that i sent to others. it's like my way of keeping a journal, really. i've looked back at some of my older emails from time to time, and i can really see how i've changed since those days. at the same time, older stuff like that can really get me reminiscing about "the good old days." so much has changed in my life since high-school and before.

when it comes to online chat conversations, i have saved some from time to time. i have about 20 or so very special ones that i had with mikayla when we were first dating. i *love* to have those saved. it's like a snapshot of my life. i also have some other odd ones saved that either freaked me out, or made me laugh.

if i were to lose any or all of this stuff, i'd be fine, but, man, that would suck.

p.s. some older versions of AIM automatically log every conversation, and ICQ logs everything too

magnum magnumOG 2001

i have never seen icq log, i started using it in 96 but stopped around 97 and it didnt do it back then, nor have i seen aim do it either.

iwz iwz

yeah, the later version of icq have the feature, and aim had it in the very first betas of version 4.x something, but it was removed after like 3 versions.

nine9starOG 2001

At my email account i have separate folders for groups/ or specific people. If they send me an email i respond and then pop it in their folder out of habit - then every so often i go thru and delete all the drivel (i dont save ones like " yes i agree" or something pointless")

Also have been known to save the odd aim convo, either because it was special, or had some ones addy or something and i couldnt be bothered putting it in my addy book str8 away so theres me - so burn me on a stake - im proud of what i do ;) ha ha
