just try reinstalling it from www.divx.com. I dunno, I just tried to import a divx file in Movie Maker in Vista, and it worked fine. But who knows, maybe it's different in Vista.
do you have the full divx codec installed?

Adobe Premiere Elements can do everything you need, I think. They have a free trial, try it out. http://www.adobe.com/products/premiereel/ TMPGEnc didn't work out for you?
