So, like, I mean, totally, fersure

For reals! YES

What's up homies. It seems like some of you out there are still using Internet Explorer. You reaally reaaaally need to switch over to Firefox www.getfirefox.com. It's a much safer browser to use, and it has TABS for great justice! Seriously, I want to see the 49% of you that are on IE switch over to Firefox by next week. Fersure.

Also, for anyone who hasn't seen the few pictures I took of Brandon and Jamie's wedding, here's the link:
http://picasaweb.google.com/ianzabel/BrandonAndJamieSWeddingSeptember4th2006

I probably won't be putting these up in the eZabel Pictures section anytime soon, so that's all you're getting from me.

I'm feeling right now like I'm never going to get all my work done before I leave for vacation. And the worst part is, no one in the office can help me because no one knows how to do what I do. I thought it was job security, but this is just insanity.

I know the feeling. In my division of the company I work for I am the only one who can accomplish the work that I do. I am THE man. haha...

specialk specialkOG 2003 ·

So one more short story...

I went out in service today, which was a struggle due to the lack of sleeping issue. (Although I tried the warm milk thing the night before, and it did a really good job relaxing me....thanks Kam!)
I was stressing because we've been trying to be really good about not spending money (with the exception of my minor shopping spree for household items the other day), and I didn't necessarily want to drive, since gas money was an issue, as was money for break.
I wound in a group with my sis-in law Leah, and two older pioneer sisters. And I wound up driving, since my car is the biggest. The other sisters were breaking off from us at 10:30 to go on a study, and when I dropped them off, the one sister takes my hand and puts some money in it. I tried to be polite and decline, but I've learned the hard way, that you shouldn't refuse money from older people....they get angry, hahaha. Anyways, after one protest, I thanked her and took it.

POINT BEING....
I love Jehovah's organization. I'm not used to people offering me money in service for driving, and even though I was later told this sister makes sure to do that all the time for those who drive, it was something that really made my morning, knowing how Jehovah provides for us when we need it. I felt so good about going out in service, and having to drive didn't even bother me after that.
I just love how He takes care of us, knowing when we need it most.

Okay tech question:

We have optimum online with their cable modem. My sister as an ibook-wireless capable. What kind of router should we get so she can share in on the internet goodness?

iwz iwz ·

I use a netgear at home, and I'm happy with it.

Pretty much any standard 802.11g router will be fine. Just don't go for one of the super turbocharged ones that say they're 100mbit or faster, as her ibook won't be able to take advantage of those speeds. You want 54g.

There's always good deals on www.techbargains.com too

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

Thanks!

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

Okay..so my sister actually ran out before I got an answer and got this Belkin Wireless G Router. I can't get it hooked up to the computer, though. The wire they gave us that is supposed to connect the router to the computer doesn't fit in any of the plug-socket thingies.

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 ·

The router doesn't connect to the computer, it connects via CAT-5 cable to the cable modem. The computer connects wirelessly.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

Are you sure? THey provide a wire that is supposed to connect the router to the computer because you're using the wire that used to connect the computer to the modem to connect the modem to the router. I thought that just the laptop was going to connect wirelessly while my desktop would still be plugged in?

Will a router slow down my internet connection?

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 ·

I guess you can do that. Usually wireless routers have a few ports in the back to connect wired devices. They should use the same type of cable that was connecting your computer to the modem before. (CAT-5 cable)

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 ·

Actually, sometimes they allow you to connect using a USB port instead. Is it a USB connector? Does it look like this?

http://www.ymouse.com/pigraphics/grxkeys/usb-432.jpg

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

It's not as USB connector, that's the problem. Our modem was connected to the computer using a USB connector but they gave us a wire that has a phone-jack looking connector that doesn't fit in the phone-jack outlet on the computer.

magnum magnumOG 2001 ·

model # of router would be nice so as to help

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 · magnum

Where would this model number be? It just says Belkin, Wireless G (or 802.11g) Router

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 ·

That would be a CAT-5 cable. :) I take it you don't have an ethernet card in your computer? That seems really odd to me since just about every computer comes with one standard. If your computer really doesn't have one, then your only option would probably be to get something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/F5D7050-Wireless-802-11g-Network-Adapter/dp/B0002HA7FY/ref=pd_sim_e_3/104-2374995-6059938?ie=UTF8

to connect wireless through your usb port. Either that or buy an ethernet card, (they're cheap), and have a local geek install it for you.

M

:-) I loved 'watching' this play out... I am always getting the calls for this kinda stuff... y'all did a fine job!

yeah, sounds like you need a network card in your computer. surprising that your computer doesn't have one already. (is it old??)

keep looking around on the back for another jack, maybe you missed it

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 ·

I'm really surprised it has a USB port and not a network card. I don't remember USB becoming popular until after network cards were pretty much standard.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

My computer isn't that old. It originally just had USB 1.0 port (something like that) and Lance put a 2.0 whatever version USB port on in it for me so I could use my ipod.

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002 ·

It'll probably seem pathetic, but only 20 minutes. I have really bad asthma and I've never worked out so it's taking some getting used to. Within 2 minutes of walking I'm wheezing. I broke it up well today - 5 walking, 5 jogging, 10 running, 10 cooldown. Anyway, I'm pumped to keep improving that and I've been to the gym everyday this week.

D
dgiaimoOG 2003 ·

Actually, I'm kind of impressed that you can run at all with asthma. Personally, if I were in your position, I would stick to walking and try to go for at least 30 minutes. Ideal would be an hour, but I don't know if you have that kind of time.

Ok,ok gather round little ones... one day in the fall of 1999 I was visiting the Ukraine (branch construction), it was arranged that I take a tour of what they were using as the branch a six KH building. I was sent me with a really nice brother(not a word of English), as we entered the dining room for lunch a couple of German brothers spotted me and invited me to their room for coffee after the meal. I thought no problem I want the association and communication of other westerners, I thought I could just decline the coffee when I got there... didn't happen coffee in the cup waiting for me upon arrival. It was such a big deal for them to serve a 'good' cup of coffee in Ukraine. I drank.

So while it wasn't with a gun to my head, it was necessary.

UGH what the heck man, that sucks

This is exactly why I moved. My family manages to do something stupid to me even if it isn't intentional. At least I don't have to live with them while it happens.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 ·

is this the same sister who jacked you on the apt?

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

Yeah. Basically all of my siblings are trouble. The youngest who did this at least has a decent heart. She has been paying me back for things she has inflicted upon me. But it's a headache nonetheless. If she gets insurance, the company will fix it.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 ·

awww im sorry my brutha!!! can she get the "generic" insurance, the PL & PD, isnt that the cheapest?

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

she doesn't have a car.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 ·

you can still get it even tho your carless....as a part time driver...no?

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

I never heard of that. I always thought you need a car to be insured.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 ·

well i dont know about there but here in CA you dont have to have a car to get insurance. you can be insured as a part time driver. you might want to have her look into it.

B
brothermanOG 2004 ·

Ayeeyah!! Now my policy is gonna be canceled if she doesn't get insurance of her own!! She doesn't live with me. What is wrong with these people!!

iwz iwz · brotherman

i totally don't understand this. >:(

Because the insurance company had to pay out $16,000 for my Camry that got wrecked in February by her, they need assurance that my sister has her own insurance so that this can't happen again.
It still makes no sense, because even if she has insurance and I let her use my car, she still wouldn't be a driver on my policy. Not that she'd ever get a car from me again. It's all nonsense.
She's gonna convince my parents to let her on their's for a little while till she gets a car and her own policy.
Lesson of the day, don't let anyone not listed as a driver on your policy drive your car. It could backfire on you if they get into an accident.
Oh and Geico is the company giving me the hassle. The gecko is EVIL!!
