Go to any cool concerts this summer? Any planned?

I'm going to the Format and Ted Leo in August, but nothing so far. What have been the best shows of your summer? Of your life?

Went to the Badly Drawn Boy concert Saturday. He had a full band with him this time. It was EXCELLENT! He did every song from the latest album "Born in the UK," plus a few from each of the previous albums.

Just friday, because Liam and I are cheap, and we want to see cali a little bit during a long weekend.

theremin thereminOG 2002 ·

Damien Rice and Paul Weller are coming up. I'd really like seeing Rice. Don't think I'll get to see any of those 2 sadly.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 ·

i want to see damien rice too! one of my co-workers saw him a few years back and said it was one of the best he's been to.

theremin thereminOG 2002 ·

I've seen one of his concerts on television in 2004. He rocked! Definately one of the people I want to see perform before I die.

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003 ·

I need to see Deftones, CKY and Mastodon, i'll be quite upset if i miss any of those three

jp jpOG 2003 ·

they put on a really really tight show too. they are right on. i saw them at ramapo college like 6 months ago, it was really good.

superhero superheroOG 2004 ·

dude, i can't believe you did that and didn't call me. i work about 5 minutes away from ramapo college. argh!!

jp jpOG 2003 ·

really? well it would have been a short drive. :)

but maxwells is really nice, its a tiny place. you guys should definately come.

I like Maxwells

jp jpOG 2003 ·

yeah tickets still available, and maxwells is a tiny place too.

hope you guys had fun. i thought nightmare was really not nearly as good as they were last time i saw them. i still had a great time though.

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder ·

so weird... echofission, that opening band... i used to work with the kid who is the drummer for that band, john abate

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder ·

he also drives the same car as me

jp jpOG 2003 ·

they said the drummer was from califon. i gave a yell

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002 ·

did anyone see beck this past weekend at lowe's in jersey city?? i'm bummed that i missed that!

yay yayOG 2004 ·

Thanks to stef I got to see pennywise, ignite, and circle jerks. Great show, not much of a fan of circle jerks but ignite was suprisingly intense and pennywise was incredible. Can't believe this punk scene still exists

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 ·

im so jealous!!! i havent seen circle jerks in YEARS! LUUUV them (if you ever get a chance go see TSOL) and pennywise...always a blast!!

J
jwebsOG 2003 ·

I was there last night too, with Todd - it was great!

yay yayOG 2004 ·

i was at stone pony, i guess you were at irving plaza?

J
jwebsOG 2003 ·

yeah - we were at Irving Plaza - the place was nuts - felt the floor flexing during Pennywise!

yay yayOG 2004 ·

yeah it was great to see old school pits opening up.

A
alexOG 2001 ·

i wanted to go to that show sooo bad!!!

J
jwebsOG 2003 ·

you could've come with Todd and me - :)

A
alexOG 2001 ·

for the mont of october, irving plaza has some really awesome shows lined up for the next few months

bands such as pennywise, ignite, lost prophets, story of the year, nfg, circle jerks, sparta, the new york dolls, joan jet, ziggy marely, victor wooten, and robert earle keen,, and even michael ian black and michael showalter are performing standup.

i obviously can't go to all of these so i just have to figure out which ones i want to see most. mike sho, and michael ian black are def. at the top of the list for me.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003 ·

sparta, haha. makes me think of the history.

the members of At The Drive In broke up and became two bands-- Sparta and the Mars Volta.

fairly recently, the guitarist from Sparta joined the the boys in the Mars Volta as a knob twiddler. the Mars Volta is slowly turning back into At The Drive In, but with a very different sound, OF COURSE.

now, is Sparta any good? i can't imagine they are, because people on ezabel like them. BUTTT i can't say for sure, because i've never really listened to them.

A
alexOG 2001 ·

yeah they are pretty good. the guys voice gets a little annoying but other then that i like em'.

iwz iwz ·

hmmm, so since i like At the Drive In and Mars Volta, they must be no good too

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003 ·

This equation interests me. Show work.

iwz iwz ·

"Show work." confuses me.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003 ·

It shouldn't.

iwz iwz ·

Pray tell.

jp jpOG 2003 ·

indeed.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003 ·

DIDN'T YOU'S GO TO SCHOOL?! WHEN YOU DID MATH PROBLEMS DIDN'T YOU HAVE TO SHOW YOUR WORK?

G

iwz iwz ·

showalter and black probably didn't want david wain on tour with them because he always gets all the ladies.

A
alexOG 2001 ·

hahaha, definitely,

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

I saw Sparta open for Weezer a few years ago.

A
alexOG 2001 ·

did you like?

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

Oh..and they weren't any good.

A
alexOG 2001 ·

haha, well some bands aren't very good live. like goldfinger so i've heard.
and also you said it was a few years ago, so they may have just been crappy back then or whatever.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003 ·

Goldfinger is ownage live. Old Goldfinger mostly. Back when they did Skiers Must Perish regularly. I saw them like 10 times.

jp jpOG 2003 ·

yeah they put on a fun show. hopefully mike can come in here and reminisce about their show in philly a couple years back.

tesoro tesoroOG 2001 ·

what lunatic told you GF wasnt good live?!? i've been to tons of shows, and GF is my fav. i've seen them at least 8 times.

A
alexOG 2001 ·

well that just makes you a loser.

tesoro tesoroOG 2001 ·

interesting...having a fav. band and seeing them numerous times live makes me a loser. hmm, we should get a few opinions about that on this site, i wonder what everyone would say.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

My list for the upcoming month..so crazy:
10.16.Flogging Molly--Webster Hall
10.29.The Toasters--Knitting Factory
10.30.AFI--Starland Ballroom
11.01.Rx Bandits--CMJ
11.03.Rx Bandits--Stone Pony

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003 ·

ooh. bandits. stone pony. less than a half hour from me. i'm there.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

Yay! They're also playing in Philly. But it turns out it's only physically possible for me to do one show a night so I have to pick and choose.

theremin thereminOG 2002 ·

I would like to see Beck and Primus

jp jpOG 2003 ·

beck is so great live!

jp jpOG 2003 ·

everyone get his new album, the information, it comes out today!

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002 ·

jp jpOG 2003 ·

Sammy and I are definetely going to the asbury show on Friday, probably the NY one too. I probably won't do the Philly one, I hate driving all the way there and back.

theremin thereminOG 2002 ·

Tortoise on Sunday was Gorgeous

yay yayOG 2004 ·

I went to see the blue man group. Oh wow that was great. I got to go on stage, and I took out a roll of duct tape and taped all three those nerds together and took them to an island surrounded by yellow paint. Good bye! Haha see ya when your yellow!

jp jpOG 2003 ·

i saw them perform at halftime at a knicks game probably almost ten years ago. maybe it was like 97.

theremin thereminOG 2002 ·

Tortoise is only weeks away!

theremin thereminOG 2002 ·

Possibly Yo La Tengo again. But this time at Loews Theatre, Jersey City.

This week - Wednesday night - super small "Taking Back Sunday" show at Webster Hall. I got the wife tickets, so it should be an awesome show. I don't like TBS a huge amount (they're good and all but don't get me that excited), but my wife was nice enough to suffer through like 3 or 4 Rob Thomas shows now, so I believe it's only fair.

In the past year, strangely enough, I've only seen like, the same two shows

jp jpOG 2003 ·

nice. i saw new found glory at webster and they shut down the show due to worries of the floor collapsing.

forrestina forrestinaOG 2002 ·

went to a rockabily monster mash show at otto's shrunken head (divey tiki bar) in ny. so much fun! boys in white shirts & cuffed levis with super slick hair and pompadors. curvy ladies in retro dresses, pencil skirts and kitten heels. what a cute scene.

jp jpOG 2003 ·

ted leo was a lot of fun. not only was it free, but he played for TWO HOURS. definately the best show for the buck ive ever gotten. and free parking in nyc doesnt hurt either. that was the nicest night ive had in a long time for my wallet.

ted is an amazing guitar player. and seems like hes a really nice guy. he is really down to earth from stage and didnt curse once. i got to briefly talk to him afterwards, just to tell him he played well and ask him a couple questions. He was really nice! good show.

B

jp jpOG 2003 ·

haha, why is it funny?

B

Uh, ok. haha... A pharmacist playing music...kind of strange.

jp jpOG 2003 ·

hmm. i guess so. they can play well.

modestjesse modestjesseOG 2004 ·

Concert was awesome. I got there and Mates of State were one, I was happy to see them do Fraud of the 80's or what ever it's called. Spoon came up next but I was on my phone the whole time.

Death Cab came on and they were amazing! I was really impressed with how great they sounded. They did a litte of everthing. Stuff from Transatlanticism, Plans, and and two of their earlier CD's. They also did a Sonics Cover. But it was really cool because Gibbard spoke to the audience and was pretty funny. They had us laughing a few times. Mates of State came out to join them on Transatlanticism, and it was phenominal. Really was a great show, one of my favorites of recent memory.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003 ·

that sounds great. believe it or not, i like mates better than DC. still, that sounds like a top notch show.

theremin thereminOG 2002 ·

Oh, coo, I like Spoon.

jp jpOG 2003 ·

"i summon you" is an amazing song.

jp jpOG 2003 ·

DUDE. the format was AMAZING. like wow. i really enjoyed it.

jack's mannequin-we missed a lot of their set, unfortunately. opening for OAR, i guess the college frat boys REALLY want to get their band starting on time, because jack's started early and didnt play long. but what we saw was good, i'd just like to see them in a smaller venue.

i saw tally hall on thursday too in philly, a fun band. then sunday i went to music fest in bethlehem. so it was definately a music filled weekend, although we were more into the fireworks at musicfest.

jp jpOG 2003 ·

oh yeah, and jacks/oar-ive never seen so many college dweebs in my life, and i go to college. ugh. all these frat boys and fake tan short skirt girlfriends drinking cheap beer. none of them cared about jacks mannequin, so they were all getting drunk while they were playing. we left after jakcs, missing OAR, and on the way out, we saw this guy passed out in a ravine with his face in a bush. we later saw a guy run face first into a port-a-john. and heard more f-bombs dropped than ever in my life.

iwz iwz ·

how many piece band did The Format play with?

jp jpOG 2003 ·

well nate sang, sam played keyboard and acoustic (2 original band members-they started out as only 2 guys, but i think now they have added permanent members of the band i believe). then a drummer, two electric guitarists, bass, drums, and guys on trombone and trumpet.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

I think when I saw them, a few years ago now, they had only 2 guys on stage..

"Ali : When you is on your marches is there music?
George : There is lots of music.
Ali : Is you knocking out a drum and bass sound or is it more speed garage?
George : *pause* Er, different drummers have different styles.
Ali : Do you not think you should use a bit of human beat box? Then people could really chill.
Ali : Would you ever marry a protestant girl?
George : Perhaps.
Ali : Well that is a good gesture, no. Wot about marrying a Catholic girl?
George : Possibly because of my faith I would not.
Ali : But what if she was fit?
George : Again, because of my religion, no.
Ali : But what if she had her own car, AND sound system and she wasn't gonna be stealing money off you all the time. Would you marry 'er then?
George : I think I could be friends with Catholics.
[..............]
George : It's hard for some people to understand, but because of my faith, no.
Ali : But what if they woz really, really fit?
George : NO.
Ali : Wot about the band the Corrs? Would you marry them?
George : NO!
Ali : So you is telling me that if they walked in 'ere now and asked you to marry them you wouldn't.

Ali : All three of them.
George : NO.
Ali : So you really believe this stuff then!"

theremin thereminOG 2002 ·

Don't think I know Borat.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003 ·

Like Ali-G, Borat is one of Sasha Baron Cohen's alter-egos. Same comedian, different costume, different shtick. Borat is supposed to be a reporter from Kazakhstan who is adjusting to American life. He's KILLER funny. I guess you've never seen the Ali-G show, but know well of it's subject.

i came so close to getting tickets to a me first and the gimme gimme's concert, but it sold out at the last minute (that was actually like 2 or 3 summers ago, but still very very very disapointing).

originalsnob originalsnobOG 2004 ·

I had REALLY REALLY wanted to see part of Bon Jovi's: HAVE A NICE DAY tour. Nickleback opening for them so it would've been really awesome. I thought my sister was gonna be able to get me tickets through her job but, she couldn't find the concert in the listed for the discount she would've gotten =(

jp jpOG 2003 ·

woohoo! im going to see jack's mannequin on the 11th, then the format on the 12th! its gonna be an awesome weekend.

is anyone going to warped this year?

theremin thereminOG 2002 ·

jp jpOG 2003 ·

Good shows I missed this summer :(

Radiohead
Starlight Mints
Calexico
The Walkmen
Six Organs of Admittance
The Boredoms
The Buzzcocks

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003 ·

the Boredoms are crazy. i got one of their CDs and it's like two songs. nearly thirty minutes apiece. really fun stuff.

theremin thereminOG 2002 ·

It's funny how they try and give their songs English titles. The titles are sooo incoherent.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

Nevermind the Buzzcocks.

theremin thereminOG 2002 ·

They rock kiddo

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

No no no..you're supposed to give the line about the sexpistols.

theremin thereminOG 2002 ·

...Here's the Sex Pistols?

Threw me off 'cuz Buzzcocks is not the word.

Nevermind the Buzzcocks is however a TV quiz show on like BBC2.

thatdarngirl thatdarngirlOG 2002 ·

It just sounded good at the time in my head :)

web-toedchloe web-toedchloeOG 2001 ·

I went to an instrumental Yo La Tengo, outdoors on a stage in Prospect Park, Brooklyn with French underwater documentary film on a huge screen a couple weeks ago.

Upcoming shows I'm going to this summer will be The Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth, The Magic Numbers, and Tortoise.

modestjesse modestjesseOG 2004 ·

Hrm, concerts I went to this summer:

Fiona Apple at a PNC Arts Center type venue, Dresdon Dolls & Violent Femmes at some open field, and I think that's been it so far.

Best concert I've ever gone to would have to be Smashing Pumpkins at the Academy in NYC. It was a small venue, they only sold tickets at 3 local locations (anti-ticketmaster at the time), and it was just before or just after the release of Mellon Collie. It was before they began the world tour and only played in 3 cities, NYC, Toronto, and DC. Lot of energy at the show and I got to see Corgan come off the stage swinging at some kid who threw a shirt on him during a solo. It was really incredible how he - in mid solo - grabbed the shirt and flung it off the arm of the guitar and went back to playing with out skipping a beat. It was really awesome. I saw them once more in Nassau before the piano player od'd.

Runner up shows would be Modest Mouse at the Electric Factory. Radar Brothers opened up and !!! came on next. !!! rocked the house, they were so awesome. It was really the first show where EVERYONE in the place was dancing. !!! really puts on a good show. Modest Mouse was awesome too.

Another runner up would be Kiss at MSG. If you ever have the opportunity to see them, go, you won't regret it. It's what they do best.

WHAT I missed Fiona Apple... where was she playingggggggggggggg argg that's what i get for not keeping up with this stuff, heh

Fiona Apple's shows are amazing

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003 ·

AH! she's playing this Friday and Saturday in my area! And I have my convention this weekend! AH! AHH!!

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003 ·

i think the best shows of my life have been the three Static-X shows i've been to

SO high-energy, SO awesome

and Tool but that goes without saying they are just supreme

this summer i haven't been to any shows yet... i think i'm growing out of the "going to shows" stage and i'm just tired of dealing with hundreds of smelly 12 year olds

theremin thereminOG 2002 ·

Allentown Fair? I'm going. But on the Flaming Lips / Sonic Youth day.

web-toedchloe web-toedchloeOG 2001 ·

I'm really digging the new TBS album, so I'd like to see them, and A-town is so close, but the fair is probably going to be a mobscene. And it's going to be $80 for both Donovan and I... I'm still not sure.

tesoro tesoroOG 2001 ·

you should come, i think it's gonna be a good time, and i did think that was kinda a lot for a TBS show, but it includes fair admissions which probably would've been $10 bucks apiece. so if you get there early enough to enjoy the fair, i think it's worth it.

web-toedchloe web-toedchloeOG 2001 ·

If we end up going, I'll let you know. I think we might just play it by ear.
