you have access to the pageContext within your tag class IIRC (at least if you extend TagSupport)? pageContext.getServletContext() should work.

not sure how easy it is to get an project up there, but you could try rubyforge.net rubyforge is only open-source, but you can still control the commiters list, I believe.

thats a pretty neat way of doing it. very DRY, but i[maybe]i a bit hack-ish. but if it keeps the code tight, it could be a good thing.
