Happy Monday

iwz by iwz · Dec 11, 2006 · 7,721 views

My company moved from the 3rd floor to the 1st over the weekend. This is like our 5th move in the same building. We're in a very very tight space now. Basically, we can't hire any new employees or they'll have to sit in closets or something. hehe

In other news, this site's pretty dead recently, huh?

AI Summary

December 11, 2006, "Happy Monday" post, iwz mentions the company's fifth move to a smaller space due to downsizing. The discussion that follows is dominated by jokes about the company's financial struggles and iwz's dry humor about the layoffs. A few users, such as socalgal and superhero, offer more serious advice and support, while others, like juicymango, engage in heated exchanges about grammar and Tyra Banks' comments on body image. The conversation remains lighthearted, with users sharing personal anecdotes and humorously describing their lives...

So I was out shopping last night trying to find a second wiimote, impossible to find. but target, gamestop, and best buy all had ps3s. people are returning them because they can't sell them for as much as they had hoped.

iwz #87.1 iwz

i keep hearing this from so many people.. PS3s are just not moving. too much money right now. seems like it's super easy to get one right now, though, if you want one.

a 2nd wii remote is a VERY tough find right now... :/ i'm sure it'll be much easier in like 2 weeks. AND when Wii Play comes out next month sometime, it'll come with a free remote, so that'll be good

socalgal #87.1.1 socalgalOG 2003

my co-worker sold his for $1800 on ebay. I couldnt imagine paying that much...im just waiting till the "rush" is over to get mine.

iwz #87.1.1.1 iwz

so you actually want a PS3?

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

Sitting on my desk this morning: Two presents with cards that say "Merry Christmas". People are so dense; how many times do I have to say I don't celebrate this pagan holiday!? Now I have to have the awkward conversation of saying why I don't want a christmas present. Great way to start the morning.

web-toedchloe #85.1 web-toedchloeOG 2001

Hahaha - I said a quick prayer and it totally worked. The attorney came over and said, "You have to open your gift. Really, it's not for Christmas, that was just the only card I had left." And it was a subscription to a foodie mag that I totally wanted! Ahhh, funny stuff.

socalgal #85.1.1 socalgalOG 2003

awww you reject their presents? i couldn't do that. they're only acting as they know how...w/o the true knowledge. *but you did get what you wanted..LOL

web-toedchloe #85.1.1.1 web-toedchloeOG 2001

Well I would've said something like, "I appreciate your thoughtfulness, but my conscience doesn't allow me to receive gifts associated with this holiday." Fortunately, I didn't have to say that to anyone. There's almost no way to put it without hurting feelings, so I'm glad it didn't come up.

specialk #81 specialkOG 2003

Ok, this is really just me venting about a stupid issue that came up today at Tyle's school....so anyone that doesn't like long venting stories, sorry in advance.

I go to pick up Tyler from school, and there's another mom that goes into the class before me. I wait outside. All the kids leave the class, and Tyler's the last one in there....all of a sudden, he gets this look on his face like someone just slapped him and THEN killed his puppy.
We walk out of the room, and when I asked him what was wrong, he told me that Jamie's mom (the mom that was in the room before me) had overheard him saying that Jamie was his best friend.
She proceeds to say this to my son:

"No you aren't his best friend. You're not even his friend, and I don't want you talking to him or playing with him at all."

So naturally, my mama bear claws come out, and I spent the next 5 minutes debating how much it would scar Tyler to watch me run her over with my SUV. I chose to wait until she left, then I went in and talked to the teacher.

His teacher confirmed all this, and said she's never heard an adult speak so coldly to another child. The mother's reason for all this? Because she had heard, through her son, who heard through another kid, soemthing that Tyler may or may not have done (because no adult ever saw) that she didn't like. So.....she just decided to bring a 7 year old to tears. Nice.

iwz #81.1 iwz

specialk #81.3.1 specialkOG 2003

Yeah, he's cool. He got spoiled a little when we got home, and he's pretty understanding about stupid crap like that. I'm debating whether or not I should speak to the mom the next time I see her though. I'm very concerned about getting a bit too upset in front of her, haha.

socalgal #81.3.1.1 socalgalOG 2003

was the teacher going to confront her?

specialk specialkOG 2003

She already flat out told the mom that it was uncalled for, but I guess she was so taken aback by what the mom had said that she didn't really know what else to say. She's a very.....interesting teacher, hahaha.

socalgal #78.3 socalgalOG 2003

yep, we get a week to week 1/2 off (paid) between xmas and new years (dependss on what day xmas falls). we get our yearly bonus, and raises and a HUGE end of year party.

web-toedchloe #78.4 web-toedchloeOG 2001

Last year the office manager gave us little lotion packets. This year she gave us each a paper stating the firm used the money as a donation to a family of a local 15-year-old who was shot in his home on Monday. :( Very sad.

web-toedchloe #78.4.1 web-toedchloeOG 2001

(we get a bonus and have a holiday party too; I thought you meant in addition to that stuff. :P )

socalgal #78.4.2 socalgalOG 2003

oh wow. well at least the money is being put to good use.

web-toedchloe #78.4.2.1 web-toedchloeOG 2001

The story is that this kid just opened his front door and was shot in the chest. (The local news article.) Honestly, it's cementing our resolve to move out of this town; the shooting was about 1.5 miles from our house. That's way too close to home. Plus, the state just approved plans for a slot casino on the other side of town (near that shooting) which means unless the city beefs up its police force, there's going to be a serious increase in crime.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

wow, well, you have to remember you're still living in this system, where there's wicked everywhere. You cannot find a place thats safe. and if you're letting a shooting down the street from you make you go into hiding i would move to a remote island. LOL we had a 16 year old get shot a block away from our house. it is def scary, dont get me wrong but things are happening even in the remotest parts of the country.

web-toedchloe web-toedchloeOG 2001

I know, I know. If I could buy my own private island and live off coconuts, I totally would! That's not the only reason we want to move; there's lots of factors. Statistically, there's lots of towns surrounding us that have lower crime, so there's no reason for us to NOT go there, ya know?

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003

This reminds me of last year. Some crackhead was selling magazine subscriptions door to door and an old lady invited him in for something to drink. He robbed get, killed her with a fire poker, and left. He was caught pretty quickly.

This was like 3 streets down from me. I live in a very quiet, shore town. Shows ya that you can't hide at all. Violence strikes like lightning.

An aside: Because the dude was going door to door people started flipping out about us preaching. We weren't permitted to go out for almost two weeks. Now theres a "no knock" sticker avialable from the county. Some people think this applies to us, so we carry a little sized down document indicating that it doesn't.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

oh wow! something like that happened down our street when i was around 6. some druggie was pretending he was there to work on the old ladies house...she couldn't remember if she called them etc. so she invited him in, he robbed, raped and killed her. it was SO horrible and our neighborhood was an middle-upper class neighborhood too.

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003

yeah and not to mention that Brick, NJ is considered one of the safest towns to live in the entire US and this happened about what, 10 miles from Brick? heh

iwz #78.5 iwz

they have a christmas party here, where they give out a small cash bonus. they typically give me mine the next day or something, at my desk.

My mom is in town for the next two weeks, and the other day we were driving in service, and Tyler was pointing out all the different cactus to my mom, telling her different names.
We pass one down the street, just a simple barrel cactus, but the homeowners had put santa hats on them for decoration. My mom asked him what that cactus was.
His response?

"Pagan Cactus!"

web-toedchloe #70.1 web-toedchloeOG 2001

I think you'd win.

There's a Simpons episode when Marge goes on Jeopardy to get money for the family, and they show her with like -$21,000 at the end of the show. Then Alex Trebek pulls her off stage and says,

Ok, Marge, how do you want to handle this: Cash, check or charge?
Marge: What?
AT: Marge, you're $21,000 in the hole. Before we started the game, I asked you if you knew the rules and you said you did!

Then they have AT throughout the show chasing Marge. Good stuff.

AT: There is no reason any of you should be writing this much. Just write a letter.
One celebrity's board: "2".
AT: The number "2". I'm sorry, that's incorrect.
Celeb: No, no, my friend, it's THE LETTER "2".

specialk #69 specialkOG 2003

So Tyler had to have an allergy skin test yesterday, where they test your skin by dropping 47 different oils of possible allergens on his back, then pricking each drop to see how the skin reacts to it.
That is a horrible thing to have to watch your 7 year old deal with......oh, and he's allergic to cats, and has to get allergy shots every week for the next 6 months or so. Yipee.

socalgal #69.1 socalgalOG 2003

aw chica, im sorry. i had to get that done a few times. its horrible. and im ticklish on my back so it was a WONDERFUL experience. LOL

is he going to get allergy shots?

flomojopoanode #69.1.1 flomojopoanodeFounder

when you say "back", do you mean like "back" as in, "that girl got 'BACK'". That kind of back? um. Don't answer this. ;)

socalgal #69.1.1.1 socalgalOG 2003

hahahahaha

specialk #69.1.2 specialkOG 2003

Yeah, he starts the shots after the first of the year.
Thankfully, it's all at the Mayo Clinic, so not only does my insurance cover it, but he's getting taken care of by a top notch doctor. :)

socalgal #69.1.2.1 socalgalOG 2003

oh chica, in the long run it'll be the best thing. im so allergic to "envoronmental" things, trees, grass etc. but when i first started getting them i was so sick with the allergies then in time was better and was able to be out in the "environment" with out getting sick.

anyway long story short, i'm getting the shots again cause my insurance changed like 4 years back and now im getting them again. the cool thing, they dont hurt.

thefunkyfresh #69.2 thefunkyfreshFounder

they did that to me when i was in middle school. i had to get allergy shots for a couple years

specialk #69.2.1 specialkOG 2003

They say that after a while the shots can sort of tone down the allergies, so they either aren't as bad, or almost go away.....did that happen with yoU?

thefunkyfresh #69.2.1.1 thefunkyfreshFounder

they said i was developing asthma, which i don't really have any symptoms of now, however i do think i have a weakened immune system probably from that and from taking so many antibiotics when i was younger. i used to get sick a lot, and i faked it a lot and had a stupid doctor that would just prescribe stuff

specialk specialkOG 2003

Funny thing (but not really), but they actually had that same concern with Tyler, because he had asthma when he was younger. He grew out of it, but they said it's a risk in the long run, because it might return. The kid has an awesome immune system so far....he rarely gets sick, and if he does, it's a small cold or soemthing, maybe once a year. But even as a baby, never had those gross 'kid colds' with the snot and sniffles that other kinds had, haha.
So maybe it'll work out....I just hope the asthma doesn't come back. I'm trying to explain to him that having an inhaler isn't a 'cool' thing, haha.

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder

yeah definitely make sure he doesn't overuse that stuff, only take meds if absolutely necessary

specialk specialkOG 2003

Yeah, it was either the shots or the meds, and I hate having to put him on daily stuff....I try to avoid that if at all possible.

malibu malibuOG 2001

i have had ashtma since i was 8 and they say it wont go away because i grew into it. but they continue to try to get me to take things regularly and i'm always like, no no no no no just an inhaler and one inhaler would last like 1 year or so but i've noticed that they've definetly reduced the amount of medicine they put in the inhaler so i have to keep going back so they can keep trying to put me on regular medication.

web-toedchloe #69.3 web-toedchloeOG 2001

Does he have to get the shots because you guys have a cat, or because he's allergic to something else?

specialk #69.3.1 specialkOG 2003

We don't have a cat anymore....he was always around my mom's when we lived with her up until he was 3, but he's also allergic to some trees and weeds common to he southwest. It's basically a hayfever issue, with the cat thing thrown in, haha.
He's always sounded more 'stuffed up' to me than normally, so I just figured it was time to get it all taken care of, haha.

web-toedchloe #69.3.1.1 web-toedchloeOG 2001

Ahhh... that makes sense. I asked because some people are masochists and have cats even though they know they're allergic. I hope the shots help!

specialk specialkOG 2003

Me too....the doctor was concerned at first, thinking it was our 3 dogs...thankfully though, he's 100% ok with doggies. :)

thatdarngirl #69.4 thatdarngirlOG 2002

I've had this done a ton of times, only on my arms though..hm.

I've never got the shots, though, but I was thinking about this just yesterday and how maybe I should because I have to take allergy medicine every day and that is kind of ridiculous.

Also, probably better to do it now because as someone pointed out to me last night, as of next spring I won't have insurance for about half a year..yay!

Anyone do international texting? Does it cost any more than domestic texting? I'm trying to find out the most cost effective way for when I get an unlocked Treo 650. Looking to get the best rate for US to UK voice calls as well as US to UK texting.

superhero #60.1 superheroOG 2004

i believe it's .25/message for international, sometimes it depends on what carrier you have.

Best rate for calls, I find, is ALWAYS through a phone card. Buy one for $20 from Walgreens, wait till the weekend, call and chat to your heart's content.
(Alternatively, I suppose you could get up really early in the morning, while free nights and weekends still apply - depending on the carrier, it probably ends at 5:59 AM.)

iwz #60.1.1 iwz

.25 cents? or .25 dollars?

superhero #60.1.1.1 superheroOG 2004

uhhhh .. i meant 25 cents per message

iwz iwz

hehe, have you heard about that Verizon fiasco?

http://verizonmath.blogspot.com/2006/12/verizon-doesnt-know-dollars-from-cents.html

you have to listen to the phone call with customer service. it's sad how SO MANY people couldn't grasp the idea that $.002 is .002 DOLLARS, not .002 CENTS. hehe.. i was literally smacking myself in the head while listening to this at points haha

I forgot to post this. I especially appreciate the memo

theremin #60.1.2 thereminOG 2002

Okay. Another question if by chance you'd know this too.. If I get a fowarding UK mobile number for my US mobile phone, can texts be fowarded? 'Cause I know I can purchase a UK fowarding number to ring to my US number (I found one service for $3.00/month and 4 cents a minute). I wonder if I'd be able to receive texts to the US phone from people in the UK using the UK number. But, I'm afraid it just might work for voice and not text.

Obviously I could purchase a prepaid International roaming SIM, but the fowarding method will work out cheaper.

superhero #60.1.2.1 superheroOG 2004

good question. I suggest just trying it. or, why not have your friends in the UK sent a message to yourphonenumber@yourcarrier.com ? that would probably work better.

theremin thereminOG 2002

Hmm, okay. Thanks for the help you were able to give. Hopefully I can keep in contact with them without breaking the bank. I received an unexpecting text message last week from London, and was disappointed I couldn't reply back, because of my bare bones Nextel.

theremin thereminOG 2002

Oh, you reckon my Nextel SIM (iDen technology I think) will work on a GSM phone? (I'm awaiting shipment on an unlocked Palm Treo 650 - GSM Quad Band I just bought on eBay) I don't expect the Nextel SIM to work, but would like to know if it happens to work since the Nextel contract doesn't expire until Summer 2007. Worse Case scenerio I'll carry both phones around with respective SIMs til that time comes.

theremin thereminOG 2002

That's was weird timing.. the shipment just arrived

superhero superheroOG 2004

nope, won't work. sorry dude.

you'll have to get a Cingular SIM card, or a T-Mobile SIM card. Or, you could get a British carrier's SIM card - that'd work too.

theremin thereminOG 2002

OK bummer. I'll have to carry both phones until summer then, since my business relys on my Nextel phone number. I don't what to get for the Treo yet tho... either US Domestic SIM & a UK fowarding number, or an International Roaming SIM with UK number. Hard to weigh out the pluses and minuses and what's gonna work out cheapest for regular voice calls and texts to and from the UK.

Yeh man!

"It will always be
The end of time
The end of law
The end of life
The dogs will howl
And yank the leash
From tree to tree
From each to each

Does the man who makes the shoes own you, clown?
You can't even pry the nameplate off, now can you?
Fix it with your tiny fist there
James Van Der Beek and them sisters from Sister, Sister
The only one that's ever felt this is you
The force that's forcing you
To feel like busting up a Starbucks.

This bitter drink
Has made you drunk
The thoughts you think
Become unthunk
The sea's ablaze
The sky is too
The water's red
And the flames are blue

Nyack! Ronkonkoma! East Orange! Piscataway!"

superhero #42 superheroOG 2004

anyone getting a lot of flack about their office christmas party?

my boss knows that some of our clients are witnesses (friends of mine in Elizabeth) and he's trying to find out if they're going to their own christmas parties ...

it never ends

socalgal #42.1 socalgalOG 2003

i never went to ours at the beginning because it was an "xmas party" but then my third year here they decided to be PC about it because not everyone celebrated Xmas. they changed everything (even our shutdown was changed to winter break instead of xmas break) and called it the "end of year bash" and are clear of any holiday decor. anyway, i did get some flack for not going before.

web-toedchloe #42.2 web-toedchloeOG 2001

I totally am. And my response that it doesn't agree with my conscience to go to a party that's meant to celebrate a holiday apparently doesn't hold water with everyone around here. I don't think anyone in this building has used the term "conscience" in a sentence before.

socalgal #42.2.1 socalgalOG 2003

its the world chica, "conscience" isnt in their vocab.

web-toedchloe #42.2.1.1 web-toedchloeOG 2001

Yeah, I know. I guess I keep hoping some people will have morals. If I didn't have that hope, the 2% of me that's not at this point deeply cynical would become so. And I like that 2%! :P
