Moving to NYC!

iwz by iwz · Dec 20, 2009 · Article · 202 views

So, I've taken a new job in the city, and the commute is 2 hours each way. Mikayla and I decided to try living in the city for a while.

We signed a lease on a new apartment in Battery Park City, which is in downtown Manhattan. Address: 70 Battery Pl, New York, NY.

Here's a video tour:

It's in a quieter part of the city, with lots of parks and bike paths. Tourists don't really visit the area, and it gets really really quiet at night.

The apartment is on the first floor in a nice nine-floor building with a doorman, elevators, roof access, a gym, bike storage, laundry on every floor, and a private terrace area with grass that is only accessible to tenants. There are 11 train lines within like a 15 minute walk, which is sweet! My commute to work will be a ten minute walk, and a 14 minute train ride on the R or W. There's also a bus to Union Square right there.

These two windows are our apartment:

Looks like we'll be in the South Manhattan Congregation, which meets at a Kingdom Hall right by the Brooklyn Bridge. We haven't visited yet, but we're planning on it soon! Definitely curious about the congregation and the territory.

So, we're moving on January 23rd. And if you want to come for a visit, please come any time! Just give us a little notice so we can figure out if we're around. There's an ice-skating rink right nearby for the winter. Let's go ice-skating!

BTW, we're selling both of our cars. 2006 Subaru Outback Limited is the first to go. ~$17k, 62k miles, full warranty. If you're interested, let me know!

It's gonna be crazy!

I'm going to the Bamboozle festival with JP on May 3rd to see Jimmy Eat World. I'm sure I'll hate a lot of the other bands. I'll let you know on May 4th.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

WOW....good job broman!!

B
brothermanOG 2004

We shall have some interesting debates that month. haha

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

LOL no. i think you'll start appreciating more so than debating

B
brothermanOG 2004

No, I'm sure my ears will bleed from some of the crap I'll be subjecting myself to.

BTW... Are you sure you are 35 or so? All people that age listen to different stuff. haha

tesoro tesoroOG 2001

seriuosly, don't go. I would hate to have someone like you at a fun event like that. No one likes a debbie downer.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

eh, he'll be fine....just give him a few drinks and he'll love everyone! LOL

B
brothermanOG 2004

I think you are onto something here. haha

B
brothermanOG 2004

Oh whatever... Who asked you... I'm mainly going to hang out with people other than my two children. If I end up not liking the scene, so be it. The point is, I got to go out and do something without listening to two kids bicker back and forth.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

LOL well maybe...there are some bands that you'll be like "OMG...lame"

haha i am. i just listen to all kinds of music. there are some new bands that i love and want to see....and i stick to the old ones too that are still touring etc.

besides, im not DEAD yet. sheesh. lol

theremin thereminOG 2002

She has great taste in music.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

aw thanks. and YEAH 35 is the new 25! LOL

theremin thereminOG 2002

And 35's young dude. Not too long before I am.

B
brothermanOG 2004

You old fart...

theremin thereminOG 2002

If you wanna be like that.. you're actually a bit older than me. Musically speaking, you're the oldest man (use that term loosely) on Earth.

B
brothermanOG 2004

Do I need to use an animal analogy with you like I did with Alex? hahaha

rocksupastar rocksupastarFounder

lol dude, ur ONLY going to see JEW? why not check out some of the other bands playing?

B
brothermanOG 2004

The main reason I am going is because I want to see JEW. I'll be with JP and other people. I can't just see JEW and leave. I'm sure there will be a few other bands I will like.

rocksupastar rocksupastarFounder

well thats a good venue for you to experience alot of bands... you dont like a band, walk to another stage...

and dont drink, it gets hot, lol

B
brothermanOG 2004

Oh, they play on multiple stages? I figured they took turns. That's interesting.

Did you pass out once from drinking there? haha

rocksupastar rocksupastarFounder

nope usually its 3 stages going... plus smaller bands on the sides.

hahaha never drank at shows...

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

yeah, there are a few stages and you have some peeps in booths selling t's, glasses etc. *at least the all day concerts here do that

iwz iwz

you should try to listen to some of the bands that will be playing on that day. they all pretty much have websites or myspace pages with their music.

here's the list of bands: www.thebamboozle.com

B
brothermanOG 2004

I've heard The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. In fact I have an album of theirs. I like a few of the songs. The rest of the songs were too over the top for me.

jp jpOG 2003

THE BEST BANDS THERE!

Anyone need twin bed box springs? I bought the kids bunkbeds and no longer need their old ones. Otherwise I will be cutting them up for the trash. Seems like a waste to do that, so I thought I'd offer them to someone who may need them.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

why dont you give them away to the goodwill or somewhere else if no one else needs them?

B
brothermanOG 2004

Where do you go to give stuff like that away?

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

go to your phone book and look up the number for the good will and let them know what you have and they will either have you drop it off or they will come and pick it up. call tho, it may work different there than here. i dont know.

B

sooo.. yeah.. real estate is crazy right now. This house that I walk my dog by .. house is for sale for 239K.. CRAZY - two years ago nothing was less than 250 here and now you can have a huge house for 239 so it will probably sell for like 225-230 - SICK

B
brothermanOG 2004

You still can't get anything like that in this area for that.

superhero superheroOG 2004

you can't get that in Bergen County for less than $400, no lie. it's disgusting up here.

LOL though, because the first pic that came up was of a shed. I thought - $240 for a shed?

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003

haha

B
brothermanOG 2004

Or $1100

B
brothermanOG 2004

a month for a small apt. South Jersey is way cheaper than up here.

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003

yep. but you also get paid half of what you would get paid for up north, for most jobs. it's all relative. i guess. still stinks though because if we only waited 2 years we could have had a nicer house, LOL! But who knew back then. Plus we had no choice, the apt we were in was getting sold. But still, it just stinks.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

WOW 239K is GOOOOD. here, my friends looking at a 2 bedroom 700 sq ft for like $450k

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003

if anyone ever asks you why you don't celebrate birthdays, dont' talk about the ones in the Bible where people's heads cut off, just show them this video of Tom Cruise celebrating his birthday, that should pretty much put an end to it

it gets real priceless at about 2:09

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003

Ha, wow, today thre's crazy stuff on the Drudge Report. BRING IT ON i say.

The year 2008 may be a year of decision, not because it is a presidential election year, but because the West may be shaken to its foundations.

The dollar fell below parity with the Swiss franc for the first time on Friday as fears about more credit turmoil and a U.S. recession sparked broad selling of the U.S. currency.

Despite the Federal Reserve's efforts Wall Street fears a big US bank is in trouble

In an unprecedented move Friday, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York stepped in with emergency funds to keep beleaguered investment bank Bear Stearns Cos. afloat.

The move, after a week of persistent concerns about whether Bear could continue to meet its obligations, took the credit crisis to a new, more serious stage and was a reminder of how quickly an erosion of confidence can undermine even leading financial institutions.

theremin thereminOG 2002

Yeh, intense stuff. Bear Stearns is like the 5th biggest Investment Bank in the World, and looks like they'll probably be bought out by JP Morgan & Chase. Bear Stearns made their big profits from Mortgage Backed Securities, so the tables turn.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

OMG i LOVE the pogues! how was the show?

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

irish bands are so much fun

theremin thereminOG 2002

hahaha! I never seen that! Thanks for the post! I can hear them still playing 'Streams of Whiskey' live as I play that vid. I enjoyed a couple double Jameson's to go with the show as it happens.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

isnt that rad? LOL and you're welcome! seriously, you cant pass up the guinness or the like when you're listening to an irish band. we go and see this band "the american wake" play at the irish pub near my house

theremin thereminOG 2002

They're really good. I wanna hang out with you.

After The Pogues I purposely paced around this block to that block to listen for Irish people talking. And within like a 2 minute time frame I found them and asked them where's the pub. They said oh just down here, we're going to OldCastle, come with us. And they introduced themselves

haha
I did

Then they ordered bottled Heinekin's haha (probably just cuz they know Guinness imported doesn't match the Guinness back home)
I couldn't do that tho... I had a Bass and a Guiness

And a guy from Leeds, England met at the pub... he was a coo guy.

theremin thereminOG 2002

Oh I know you do love... too bad you weren't there, you'd absolutely have a laugh for sure. The show was amazing! I post more about it later on in 'Concerts.' Such a fun time! Wish others would've experienced it.

Can two people on here do me a large and answer some questions for me for a class? One to two sentences per answer is fine. Thanks!

How many miles do you drive each week/year for work?

Does your company reimburse you for your mileage or provide you with a company car?

Do you think it is/would be worth it for your employer to provide you with a company car?

If you were to request a company car, how would you go about justifying the cost to your employer? If you already have one, how do you think they justify the cost?

B
brothermanOG 2004

You still go to school?

iwz iwz

1) 50/year
2) Yes
3) No
4) I would probably have to bribe the company in some way. Maybe some compromising pictures of the CEO. Some sort of extortion deal. Then it would probably be justifiable.

B
brothermanOG 2004

You drive 50 miles per year? That is about as believable as Kate Beckinsale being my wife.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

wow 50 miles a year...you're saving a TON of money in gas ian!

iwz iwz

I assume Matt is talking about using your car for company use. I use my own car for work related travel once or twice a year. I am not including my commute.

iwz iwz

well, since Matt is looking for completely retarded data:

1) 10,780/year commuting to work (44 miles per day)

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

i think you're a little off on your math...

iwz iwz

*sigh* ... gina, i have three weeks vacation!

iwz iwz

44 miles per day, not week. thanks

superhero superheroOG 2004

How many miles do you drive each week/year for work? 4 miles each way, 8 miles/day = 40 miles/week = 2,000/year - however, my wife and i work together so we carpool. it's much less

Does your company reimburse you for your mileage or provide you with a company car? My last job was more outside sales, so I got $200.00/month reimbursement, flat rate. This job I get reimbursed by the mile (I think it's .50/mile now)

Do you think it is/would be worth it for your employer to provide you with a company car? Like, as a bonus for being a person who works in an office? Sure, I'd take a Porsche GT2.

If you were to request a company car, how would you go about justifying the cost to your employer? If you already have one, how do you think they justify the cost?
I'd tell them I get paid too little, so paying my car payment would make up the difference. ESPECIALLY if I got a gas card with it.

When we lived overseas for my dad's job, they gave us a family company car with Unlimited gas card. Man, did we abuse that. Greatest. Thing. Ever.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

1) 6240 (24 miles a day, 120 a week, 480 month)
2) no and no
3) they should. but im stoked i have a cool job so i'll suck it up and put my own gas in my car.
4) the only thing i would get for free and have it justified is a surfboard. im with ian, i COULD bribe the company...

jp jpOG 2003

a surfboard? do you work for a surf company?

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

yeah. well technically i work for the skate division of the surf company. but yeah, billabong owns element.

jp jpOG 2003

thats cool. im looking for a new board - i want to get a channel islands flyer - although i guess you wouldnt work with them. are there any good sites to check out for deals on boards that you in the "industry" know of?

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

do you guys have a play it again sports over there?

jp jpOG 2003

yeah, they definitely dont sell surfboards though.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

hmmm, yeah they do...

this is a good place if you're not going out all the time and you just want to learn...good prices.

jp jpOG 2003

oh thanks...i meant the one in my area doesnt have boards. i could check some jersey shore area stores though.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 jp

LOL oh yeah, i forgot you dont live close to the water. YES!!! check the ones near the beach. they'll have a store that sells them there. sorry bout the confusion.

jp jpOG 2003 socalgal

thanks! im going board shopping soon. i'd like the flyer, it seems like a nice board for my purposes. Probably around a 6'8" or so (I'm 6'3") and currently i ride a 6'2" that is too small for me now and has been for a few years. So if anyone out there is looking for an affordable shortboard, let me know :) i almost bought a new one last summer on sale, i just didnt wanna shell out the dough. This summer i plan to surf more than I have the last two years, so I'm thinking its high time to get a new board...

socalgal socalgalOG 2003 jp

go anything over a 7'. go long board. if you want to do tricks go shorter than what you have. but to just soul-surf...go 7'+

jp jpOG 2003 socalgal

i've got a longboard already. so ive got that covered. its an amazing board. it feels like im driving a cadillac when i ride that baby. sooooo smooth. i figured it was just the fact that longboards are supposed to be smooth, but after riding other longboards and not enjoying them as much, i realized how nice mine is. ill never give that one up.

my first board was a 7'4", and i loved that board too. Very mobile, easy to catch waves and stay in them. when i was about 15, it blew off the roofracks on our old VW van into the chesapeake bay, and was never seen again. i've always thought i wanted one about that size again, but i figured a 6'8-6'10 would provide a nice merger between ride and maneuverability.

Put away . . . all sorts of backbiting.—1 Pet. 2:1.

The Greek word translated "backbiting" means "insulting language." It conveys the idea of 'shooting people with words.' How well that describes the effects of an unruly tongue! Insulting speech may not seem so serious, but consider what happens when a husband or a wife uses such speech. Calling one's mate stupid, lazy, or selfish implies that his or her entire character can be summed up by a label—a demeaning one at that! This is surely cruel. And what about sweeping assertions that highlight a mate's flaws? Are not such statements as "You're always late" or "You never listen to me" really exaggerations? They are bound to elicit a defensive response. That, in turn, may trigger a heated argument. (Jas. 3:5) Over time, cutting words from either mate will erode a relationship, perhaps causing a husband or a wife to feel unloved, even unlovable. Clearly, it is important to restrain the tongue. w06 9/15 1:7-9

Yeah food is crazy. I buy Capri Sun 10 packs for the kids lunches. They've gone up 40 cents in the last 6 months. That's one item I saw a notable difference with.

rocksupastar rocksupastarFounder

im always tempted to buy those when i see them in the store, but then i realize i can just buy a big thing of juice and i do that, but ugg, they are so tempting, and they bring me back to skating at JP's house during the summer and his mom bringing them out for us...

jp jpOG 2003

yeah thats what i think of too...i havent had a capri sun in like ten years.

They taste better when you are a kid. I have fond memories of them as a child. Now it's like... whatever.

superhero superheroOG 2004

strangely, my salary has not gone up to match this. i cannot figure out why.

also, i remember driving around for no reason when I was 17 (and gas was .99, or less). Now that it's $3.00, i do not make random trips, nor do i just "go for drives" or anything else. it's really taken away a lot of my fun.

B
brothermanOG 2004

Dude, those were the days. I remember filling my cars with 10 bucks. Now it takes 55 bucks to fill my vehicle.

Oh yeah and my raise was 3% this year. Hardly enough to cover inflation.

superhero superheroOG 2004

maybe i'll request a raise to match inflation. what's the rate of inflation exactly?

B
brothermanOG 2004

Haha... If I knew I would have requested a match during my review.

i always say that im waiting for my wages to go up and they never do, so its time to find a new job.

superhero superheroOG 2004

wow, ING has changed as well. This is very un-nerving. perhaps i just put all my money under my mattress.

iwz iwz

this would be a good idea if your mattress yields a better interest rate than ING. i say do it!

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003

yeah supposedly things like pizza and bagles, foods that are ALWYAS like, a dollar or two a serving are going up up up

i'm glad i grow my own veggies in the summer, i definitely recommend it even if you just have room for a couple potted plants - grow some tomatoes and cucumbers you can kinda live off of that at least

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003

This could make for one odd family reunion: Barack Obama is a distant cousin of actor Brad Pitt, and Hillary Rodham Clinton is related to Pitt's girlfriend, Angelina Jolie.

Clinton, who is of French-Canadian descent on her mother's side, is also a distant cousin of singers Madonna, Celine Dion and Alanis Morissette. Obama, the son of a white woman from Kansas and a black man from Kenya, can call six U.S. presidents, including George W. Bush, his cousins. McCain is a sixth cousin of first lady Laura Bush.

weird!
