Moving to NYC!

iwz by iwz · Dec 20, 2009 · Article · 207 views

So, I've taken a new job in the city, and the commute is 2 hours each way. Mikayla and I decided to try living in the city for a while.

We signed a lease on a new apartment in Battery Park City, which is in downtown Manhattan. Address: 70 Battery Pl, New York, NY.

Here's a video tour:

It's in a quieter part of the city, with lots of parks and bike paths. Tourists don't really visit the area, and it gets really really quiet at night.

The apartment is on the first floor in a nice nine-floor building with a doorman, elevators, roof access, a gym, bike storage, laundry on every floor, and a private terrace area with grass that is only accessible to tenants. There are 11 train lines within like a 15 minute walk, which is sweet! My commute to work will be a ten minute walk, and a 14 minute train ride on the R or W. There's also a bus to Union Square right there.

These two windows are our apartment:

Looks like we'll be in the South Manhattan Congregation, which meets at a Kingdom Hall right by the Brooklyn Bridge. We haven't visited yet, but we're planning on it soon! Definitely curious about the congregation and the territory.

So, we're moving on January 23rd. And if you want to come for a visit, please come any time! Just give us a little notice so we can figure out if we're around. There's an ice-skating rink right nearby for the winter. Let's go ice-skating!

BTW, we're selling both of our cars. 2006 Subaru Outback Limited is the first to go. ~$17k, 62k miles, full warranty. If you're interested, let me know!

It's gonna be crazy!

Hey guys, we're going rock climbing this saturday 3/29. We're either going to www.govertical.com
in Philadelphia or to http://www.readingrocks.com/ in Reading, PA. If anyone's interested, msg me & i'll let you know the info.

brothermanOG 2004

Doesn't this fall under the same category as skydiving and bungee jumping? As in, you're nuts if you do it? A guy I work with almost died doing it.

tesoro tesoroOG 2001

no.

rocksupastar rocksupastarFounder

lol what?! your comparing rocking climbing at a rock climbing gym to skydiving or bungee jumping? cmon dude, i mean i understand ur bored and all, but you gotta try a little harder at stirring up drama...

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003

lol

tesoro tesoroOG 2001

haha, fer real. A rollercoaster would be a greater risk.

B
brothermanOG 2004

I didn't click the link. I thought they were going to a cliff face out in PA. I'm just saying, it's a dangerous sport. Even experienced climbers get killed. The guy I work with fell 50 feet before he regained control.

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

didnt you mention on here that you were going rock climbing at one point?

B
brothermanOG 2004

That same guy was trying to convince me to go. Then he told me he fell and told me a story about a guy he knew who fell onto a rock ledge and broke his legs and some other people who repelled off the end of their lines... Became less appealing after that.

rocksupastar rocksupastarFounder

dude... its a rock climbing GYM.... GYM. it has all the safety equipment and the floors are padded... i fell in one landed square on my back, other then getting the wind knocked outta me, thats all that happened.

thats like comparing paddling around a wave pool to big wave surfing in Hawaii...

B
brothermanOG 2004

Did you read what I wrote? I said I thought they were going out to a cliff to do it, not a gym. Go eat some tacos.

rocksupastar rocksupastarFounder

still... i win, you lose.

i'm too lazy to post this in the appropriate music forum, but I got the new Counting Crows and it's VERY good. Highly recommended.

Came across a program for iTunes that allows you to share your music (and get music) from friends using only iTunes. Anyone interested in setting up a music-sharing group? (NOTE: You are not allowed to criticize anyone's musical tastes.)

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

lucky charms and life cereal....the best combo ever!!!!

tesoro tesoroOG 2001

my mom never bought us the good sugary cereal as kids, so we'd make our own. I loved rice krispies w/ a sprinkle of nestle's quick powder (so the milk gets chocolatey) and a bunch of mini marshmallows and you microwave the whole thing for 20 seconds. yum.

I'm hungry for rice krispies and horseradish cheese.

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003

lol

weird thing - i was 11 when i came from poland and i really never had cereal before, we didn't have that

and i didn't like it

i didn't like any snack foods/candy/cookies

I HATED oreos and cheetos in particular that I can remember

but now of course i LOVE that stuff but can't ever eat it lol

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003 funny

same with my little cousins from Poland when they were visiting, they didn't like any of the junk food, but after being here like a month or so, they started to get used to it and they got chubtastic real quick, it was weird, they came here stick thin and left... chubbsters

superhero superheroOG 2004

i'm always amused when you talk about Poland, because i there were these polish girls that i've met several times who seem like they just left poland 10 minutes before you met them ...

yet you seem normal, and nothing like them, with no trace of accent.

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003

hey does anyone know anything about Horsham, Pennsyltucky.. i mean Pennsylvania?

B
brothermanOG 2004

Sounds like a place where they make Horseradish.

juicymango juicymangoOG 2003

yeah and that is way too dangerous!! i would never let myself be in such danger. Ever.

Oh you mean horseradish, nevermind, i didn't look it up.

B
brothermanOG 2004

I think some brand of ice cream is made there too.

tesoro tesoroOG 2001

mmm, i love horseradish in mashed potatos. and there is horseradhish cheeeeeeese, it's soooo good.

My sister can't leave work for her lunch break 'cause Pres. Bush is giving a speech. The Secret Service came to her workplace yesterday to request that they stay in during lunch. They're ordering pizza.

englandkid englandkidOG 2003

theremin thereminOG 2002

I think it's classified as top secret now.

englandkid englandkidOG 2003

A
alexOG 2001

you can't tell anyone where she works when the president is there?

theremin thereminOG 2002

I'm partly kidding. Her office is in Freehold. He's speaking in the area like across the street or something or a building next door not inside her office. But they really did give them those instructions not to leave their building for lunch during his speech. He was on CSPAN about Noon time... I just turned back to CSPAN and it looks like the speech or press conference or whatever it was, is over now.

Mike Piazza is a wimp...

Fan Sent to Jail for Assaulting Mike Piazza
Posted Mar 27th 2008 3:08PM by Tom Fornelli
Filed under: Los Angeles, Angels, AL West, MLB Fans, MLB Police Blotter, Anaheim

Last summer Eamonn (then still known to the world only as PostmanE) shared with us the story of Mike Piazza getting hit in the head by a water bottle that a fan threw at him in a game against the Angels. This did not amuse Mike at all. In fact, after the game he made it clear to the media that he was going to press charges against the "gutless" fan. "That's a complete lower level of stupidity," Piazza told reporters after the incident.

Mike wasn't lying because he did in fact press charges against the fan, and now that fan is going to spend a month in jail for what he did.
Roland Flores, 23, was sentenced to 30 days in jail and has been ordered to stay away from the stadium for three years for the assault on Oakland Athletics designated hitter Mike Piazza on July 25.

Flores pleaded guilty last week to misdemeanor counts of using force and violence while assaulting Piazza and for intentionally throwing a substance while in Angel Stadium, Anaheim police said.
Maybe it's just me, but doesn't that seem a bit extreme? I completely understand where Piazza is coming from here, because after being hit in the head by a flying water bottle at a concert once, I know that it hurts like hell. Still, jail time? Really? Did Piazza die from the resulting head wound?

superhero superheroOG 2004

actually, that doesn't seem extreme at all. imagine if an angry Rush fan threw a water bottle at ... well whoever is in Rush. Completely unexpected and unnecessary. why not just go be angry elsewhere? why be violent?

B
brothermanOG 2004

If he threw a battery or an object that could cause damage, I'd see the point in giving him a month in jail. That could kill someone. What's a water bottle going to do? I think they just made an example out of him.

who was aux. this month?

Lauren and I finished our time late Saturday night, but by then we were already on a mega "every gas station in NJ" trip, and it was too late to turn back around (we were on 46 in Wayne) and so we just stayed.

Last night was a congregation gathering for all the pioneers in our hall, it was good times and i am very tired now.

iwz iwz

wasn't able to aux, but i increased my time.

superhero superheroOG 2004

yeah it's hard when you work full time. it's a lot of long w/ends and what i call a "lunar" day. You start on saturday when it's dark, and you don't go home until it's dark. if someone says "Are we done yet?" you say "hold up your hand. if you can see your hand, it's light enough to still be out in service."

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

i def admire the ones that can work full time and reg pioneer!

my bad. Wasn't very specific

why is it when you're having a sad weekend it tends to last forever and all the good amazing weekends end in an hour?

B
brothermanOG 2004

Aww, you ok?

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

yeah. i will be. i was at the hospital w/my father on friday (he was having a minor procedure...he's ok tho) and one of my good friends called balling saying that her father only had 24 hours to live. so by the time i get to the hospital, was there only 5 mins. he passed. i am SO close to that family. he was like a father to me. so it was a VERY tough day and just a sad weekend.

englandkid englandkidOG 2003

So I need some advice. I am in the job market (AGAIN) and I got an email from someone I had sent my resume to and its basically for what I do right now (I think). I do like what I do right now, except that I am overqualified for my job and make $3.00 less an hour than I would need (which is why I am looking for a new job). So do I respond and ask how much they are willing to pay or do I schedule the interview with the possiblity of wasting both my time and theirs because I can not continue to make what I make currently. It goes against the grain to start talking about money but I know what I need.

flomojopoanode flomojopoanodeFounder

the only stupid question is one not asked. Ask. (or Axe. Depending...)

englandkid englandkidOG 2003

do I need to give him the whole story or just say how much does it pay?

rocksupastar rocksupastarFounder

why not just walk in and say... hi, im looking for a job doing *this*, i need *this* salary... remember, they need you... not the other way around.

englandkid englandkidOG 2003

yeah, technically thats true, i am currently working, so while my situation is not ideal, i have at least some money coming in

theremin thereminOG 2002

I wouldn't give them 'the wholllle story.' An employer won't look keenly on a sob story. Just state your minimum salary requirement... what kind of offer it would take you to leave your current job for the new job. That way it'll actually look more professional than if you hadn't put down a salary requirement. If you don't get... remember it as being their loss... and there must be another opportunity out there giving you what you need.

yay yayOG 2004

Hey...I downloaded The Suits from the ftp...nice job guys. I can't hear the lyrics, but it sounds good musically. That first song, I swear, is a Jimi Hendrix song. Well, it could be. From what I listened to so far, you guys have a real nice classic rock sound going on there.

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder

i forgot... that's us! thanks jp, we'll try to get some more recordings soon

flomojopoanode flomojopoanodeFounder

I didn't uploaded all our recordings, including the "work in progress" song, or any of the messed up versions of our songs. And I don't care.

Glad you like it, though!!!

i think you're thinking of the street dogs though...

A

Voted! Speaking of votes, (now this isnt for me, so i'm not too concerned) but if anyone has seen MTV's show Rock the Cradle, vote for Jesse Snider, he's a friend from HS. He's def the best on the show in my opinion and was always a super nice guy. So vote for jesse! haha

socalgal socalgalOG 2003

i heard rage against the machine is headlining lollapalooza. i looked online and all i saw were tour dates for Chicago.

just finished studying for the bookstudy this week. there's a section about the Italian Banco Ambrosiano ... essentially a bank in Italy owned by the Vatican Bank (which manages the Vatican's money), and it LOST $1.3 billion (it was making loans to dummy corporations, mostly). Just lost. It was apparently quite a scandal (back in 1982) and makes for some interesting googling.

i was only 2 at the time so I kind of missed out on this one ..

I just got back from Whistler yesterday... let me tell you it is AMAZING out there!! Supposedly they said it would be spring riding, but on the glacier bowls up top on the peaks, spring seemed so far away...

superhero superheroOG 2004

yeah man thanks for the pics, seemed like a lot of fun

g.f.s.rocks g.f.s.rocksOG 2001

Anytime Dan... you have to make a trek out west and go riding out there... it's a whole new experience

rocksupastar rocksupastarFounder

i talked to a lady at work who was up there this weekend, said it was in the 80's and snow was amazing... im so jealous!

g.f.s.rocks g.f.s.rocksOG 2001

It was the wierdest weather on Sat. It was cold on the peak (about 8,000 feet) but as you rode towards the bottom of the mountain it got hotter and hotter... seriously... once we hit Whistler Creekside we stopped at the bottom, got a pitcher of beer and nachos and relaxed outside on the patio it was so nice... That's something you will never experience on the East Coast

I wish I knew you guys were going, I so would have gone. My girl and I broke up, and I was so in need of therapeutic snowboarding - especially of Whistler quality.

omg... so turkish starwars... they stole a bunch of footage from star wars and edited it into their own movie... this is the luke skywalker training montage. check out some of the other clips on youtube, it's rediculous

U
ukrainiumOG 2002

That's pretty awsome! Its a shame that mst3k isn't around anymore to get ahold of that movie. this made the rocky training sequences seem like oscar winning footage.

fivezero fivezeroOG 2003

it's still around

thefunkyfresh thefunkyfreshFounder

lol, i said the EXACT same thing, but someone said because they actually ripped off footage from the real star wars they would probably not be allowed to use it
